Job Summary
The Department of Pathology at UCSF aims to achieve the highest standards in patient care, research and education. The Department provides diagnostic pathology services in a wide variety of subspecialties with highly trained subspecialists who are recognized nationally and internationally for their expertise. The Department's research programs are diverse and interface with a wealth of basic and translational research programs that are a hallmark of UCSF. Our educational programs include a research-intensive academic residency program and fellowships in cytopathology, dermatopathology, gastrointestinal and liver pathology, gynecologic pathology, neuropathology and surgical pathology.
Under the general direction of the Senior Clinical Research Coordinator and the Histology Supervisor, the Histotechnologist serves as a hybrid clinical and research Histotechnologist in the Dermatopathology Histology laboratory. Duties include the ability to prepare tissue specimens for examination by pathologists/research associates on all levels of the process. This includes directed grossing, fixation, processing, embedding, paraffin and frozen tissue sectioning, immunohistochemical and special stains. Histotechnologists must also be able to perform general laboratory duties, which include the use of LIS systems, QC record keeping, preparing solutions, maintaining laboratory equipment, and following procedures and instructions, both verbal and written. The incumbent must perform quality control procedures and evaluate results and must resolve minor technical and equipment problems in the lab. Supports activities required for JCAHO accreditation by assisting in updating records as directed. Performs the full scope of technical duties in the laboratory as directed. Ensures that equipment is maintained and used properly and supplies are received and stored.
The Dermatopathology and Oral Pathology Service is a fast paced, high-volume laboratory and this position requires significant attention to detail across all areas of the lab.
***NOTE: Shift is Monday - Friday; 3:00 AM - 11:30 AM.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.
Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
The salary range for this position is $58.61 - $73.11 (Hourly Rate).

Required Qualifications
- BS in Science or meets CLIA requirements for high complexity testing.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a high-volume histology laboratory.
- ASCP Certification HT/HTL (ASCP) certification.
- High level knowledge of staining techniques, reagents, troubleshooting and documentation.
- Organized laboratory practices and high-quality production.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with RNA spatial transcriptomic preparation.
- Experience with or willingness to learn tissue microarray block creation.
License/Certification
- ASCP Certification HT/HTL (ASCP) certification.
