Position description

Junior, Assistant, Associate, or Full Specialist - Gould lab

A Junior, Assistant, Associate, or Full Specialist position is available to study genetic models of human disease in Gould lab at the UCSF School of Medicine in San Francisco. The Gould lab studies a multisystem connective tissue disorder. Our research is focused on the extracellular matrix (ECM) and pathology caused by mutations in ECM components. However, the pathology is extremely broad, and we study development and disease of many organs: ocular dysgenesis and glaucoma, cerebrovascular development and stroke, congenital myopathy and hypomyelination, nephropathy, retinal degeneration, and age-related vascular cognitive impairment and dementia. The overall goal of our research is to identify molecular mechanisms underlying a novel connective tissue disorder that may be targeted with therapeutic interventions. The successful candidate will fulfill two functions. The majority of their effort will be dedicated to performing mentored wet lab research with postdoctoral fellows or senior scientist. Depending on the demonstrated level of independence, the candidate will design and conduct experiments, analyze data, report results to other lab teams and co-author manuscripts. Typical approaches include, but are not limited to standard molecular biology techniques, biochemistry, cell culturing, histology, immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, and microscopy in addition to specialized, project-specific approaches. The project will involve animal husbandry and require maintenance of a rodent colony including maintaining a database. The candidate will also contribute weekly to shared tasks for general laboratory support and maintenance.

Required Qualifications:

  • Specialists appointed at the junior rank must possess (or in process of obtaining) a BA/BS/BSc degree (or equivalent degree) in Molecular and Cell Biology (or related field) or at least four years of research experience.
  • Specialists appointed at the Assistant rank must possess (or in the process of obtaining) a Master's degree (or equivalent degree) in Molecular and Cell Biology (or related field) or a baccalaureate degree with 3 or more years of research experience.
  • Specialists appointed at the Associate rank must possess (or in the process of obtaining) a Master's degree (or equivalent degree) in Molecular and Cell Biology (or related field) or five to ten years of experience in the relevant specialization.
  • Specialists appointed at the Full rank must possess (or in the process of obtaining) terminal degree (or equivalent degree) or ten or more years of experience in the relevant specialization.
  • Applicant's materials must list (pending) qualifications upon submission.
  • Applicants must have obtained the degree requirement for the Specialist rank by the time of hire.
  • The candidate must have knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position.
  • The candidate must be hard working, passionate about research and be able to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with animal husbandry or rodent behavior is strongly preferred.
