The Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s Advanced Light Source Division has an opening for a Radiation Physicist. This pivotal role involves conducting thorough radiological risk assessments and crafting protective measures to mitigate radiation exposure, alongside overseeing radiation safety protocols and collaborating closely with engineers on shielding design. Joining our team means being part of a dynamic environment where you will have the chance to work with cutting-edge technology and contribute to groundbreaking research.The Advanced Light Source is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national scientific user facility whose excellent scientific reputation, expert staff, and capabilities in the soft x-ray, hard x-ray, and infrared regimes attract over 1,600 academic and industrial users each year in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. It is one of five Berkeley Lab user facilities that serve a combined 11,000 users annually. The co-location of these user facilities – including the Molecular Foundry Nanoscale Science Research Center and the NERSC scientific computing center, as well as Berkeley Lab's outstanding programs in materials and chemical sciences, among others – offers a prime environment for collaborative science. The ALS has been a global leader in soft x-ray science for more than two decades and is currently undergoing a large-scale upgrade (ALS-U) that will endow the facility with state-of-the-art x-ray capabilities. It's an exciting time to join our growing team!This position will be filled at Level 3 or 4 depending on the skills, knowledge, and experience of the candidate.Level 3 Responsibilities include : Conduct, with minimal supervision, radiological risk assessment and design of protective measures to minimize radiation exposure to people and the environmentExecute radiation calculations and specify requirements for shielding of accelerators and beamlinesOrganize and perform radiation measurement campaignsManage and provide oversight of operational radiation safety aspectsWork jointly with accelerator and beamline engineers in the design of equipment and shielding to minimize radiation damageParticipate in research and development activities in radiation physics in support of the ALS & LBL mission and publish resultsLevel 4 Responsibilities Include : Develop and direct activities within the ALS Radiation Safety programContribute to the design and development of all ALS Radiation Safety Systems, including radiation monitoring and personnel protection systemsParticipate in reviews of incidents involving radiation-associated events, components, and proceduresTake a leading role in radiation-safety policy making at the ALS and in working groups across peer labsPropose and lead research activities in the field of Radiation PhysicsParticipate in ALS Division and Lab-wide committees and working groupsWhat is Required : For Level 3 : Master in Health / Radiation Physics or Nuclear Engineering or the equivalent work experience and 3 years of experienceFor Level 4 : PhD in Health / Radiation Physics or Nuclear Engineering or the equivalent work experience and 5 years of experience, including demonstrated experience with shielding design, or the equivalent combination of education and work experienceDemonstrated experience with Monte Carlo radiation generation and transport codes (e.g. FLUKA, MCNP, PHITS)In-depth knowledge of radiological hazard analysis and shielding design methodsKnowledge of applicable radiation protection regulations and requirementsKnowledge of theory and operation of radiation detectorsDemonstrated ability to work independently and within collaborationsProven excellent organization and multi-tasking skills, and ability to work in a fast-paced environmentDemonstrated excellent initiative and ability to plan, anticipate, and identify needs, assess and resolve complex problems, and develop and coordinate plans to accomplish objectivesAdvanced verbal and written communication skillsDesired Qualifications : Demonstrated experience at a particle-accelerator labExperience at a DOE national labThis position will remain open until filled.Notes : This is a full-time, career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.This position may be subject to a background check.
