Job Summary

The Supervisor, Fire & Life Safety Systems oversees skilled crafts and trades personnel responsible for the inspection, testing, maintenance (ITM), repair, and operation of fire alarm systems, Emergency Responder Radio Communication Systems (ERRCS), and other critical life safety systems across UCSF's facilities. This role ensures compliance with NFPA standards, The Joint Commission (TJC), Title 19 & 24, and local AHJ regulations, managing system upgrades, preventive maintenance, emergency repairs, and vendor contracts. The Supervisor provides technical leadership, staff supervision, and operational oversight, ensuring fire life safety systems remain fully functional, regulatory-compliant, and future-ready. This position collaborates with internal departments and external agencies to enhance system reliability, streamline processes, and uphold UCSF's commitment to safety, innovation, and compliance.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $87,900 - $187,700 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF Facilities Services Department (FS) is committed to creating an exceptional campus physical environment to support the research, teaching, health care, and community service mission of the University. FS employs over 460 professional staff and acts as a steward for over $100 million in operating funds to achieve its goals in operating and maintaining the UCSF campus environment. FS is organized into 7 operating units : (1) West Campus / Parnassus Operations, (2) East Campus / Mission Bay Operations, (3) Engineering & Utilities, (4) Facilities Projects (5) Business Operations Service Center, (6) Custodial Services, and (7) Office of the AVC, including Administration & Communications.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and / or 10 years of equivalent experience / training in facilities management, emergency communication systems, or a related field, with supervisory experience in a complex regulatory environment.
  • Expert Knowledge of Fire Life Safety Systems and ERRCS : Extensive expertise in the design, installation, programming, maintenance, and regulatory compliance of fire alarm systems and Emergency Responder Radio Communication Systems (ERRCS). Deep understanding of NFPA 72, NFPA 1221, DCFM, OSHPD / HCAI, FCC regulations, and local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) requirements to ensure full compliance and operational excellence.
  • Strategic Leadership & Personnel Management : Proven ability to supervise, train, and mentor multidisciplinary teams, including Fire Alarm Technicians, Building Maintenance Workers (BMWs), and inspectors. Skilled in workload distribution, performance evaluation, and professional development to ensure a highly skilled and efficient workforce.
  • Vendor and Contract Management : Expertise in contract negotiation, vendor oversight, and performance management to uphold service quality, regulatory compliance, and cost efficiency. Strong ability to manage multiple vendors and service agreements, ensuring adherence to UCSF's procurement standards and operational needs.
  • Technical Expertise in ERRCS Installation and Maintenance : In-depth experience in the installation, programming, troubleshooting, and optimization of Edwards fire alarm systems, mass notification systems, and ERRCS infrastructure. Skilled in networked fire life safety systems, signal transmission integrity, and integrating emergency communication protocols into UCSF's security framework.
  • Proficiency in CMMS (Maximo) and Data-Driven Maintenance Planning : Strong ability to utilize Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) such as Maximo for tracking work orders, inspections, preventive maintenance schedules, and compliance documentation. Ability to analyze system performance trends and implement data-driven improvements.
  • Problem-Solving and Risk Management : Exceptional problem-solving and risk mitigation skills in diagnosing system failures, coordinating emergency repairs, and ensuring uninterrupted safety operations. Ability to assess complex technical challenges, implement solutions proactively, and maintain strict adherence to compliance, life safety, and security
  • Experience with UCSF Systems : Familiarity with UCSF's organizational structure, compliance landscape, Facilities operations, and emergency response protocols. Strong understanding of UCSF's campus procedures, hospital requirements, and cross-departmental collaboration processes to ensure seamless integration of fire life safety programs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Valid Driver's License for on-site supervision and coordination between various UCSF locations.
  • Advanced Certifications : Certification in fire alarm systems (e.g., EST-3 fire panel, Fireworks software) or ERRCS-related fields.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification or equivalent project management certification.
  • NFPA Certification or equivalent certification related to fire safety and emergency communication systems. Required within first year of hire.
