Pay Rate/Range: The budgeted annual salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $225,000 to $300,000. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. The full annual salary range for this position is $184,800 to $379,400.

Brief Summary of Job Duties:
A&L is a nationally prominent program that presents over 250 performances, lectures, films and outreach events and activities each year for the benefit of the University of California Santa Barbara and the Central Coast Community. The Executive Director guides the vision, strategy and execution of all aspects of A&L artistic initiatives, academic integration, programmatic development and external relations; builds a reputation of leadership, innovation, collaboration within the university, the community, and the field of performing arts by forging partnerships, creating unique and innovative artistic opportunities, and participating in the field in a meaningful manner; fosters and develops relationships and collaborations with deans, department heads, faculty, university administrators, volunteers, alumni, donors, and community organizations; and secures substantial fundraising dollars to elevate the quality of program.
The position is responsible for artistic curation and organizational leadership, vision and planning. The incumbent is also responsible for the management, operation and development of all programs and activities related to A&L's mission. This includes integrating with the efforts and activities of the relevant academic programs within the Divisions of Humanities and Fine Arts, Social Sciences, Engineering, etc., the education/outreach programs of other academic departments, the Arts & Lectures' Council and regional and national arts organizations as appropriate.
Work with high-level internal and external advisory committees to provide management oversight of A&L and ensure financial success through ongoing fundraising efforts.
Provide leadership and direction to the volunteer support groups.
Manage and oversee a program budget of approximately $10,000,000 annually which includes administration of general funds, registration fees, endowment and development income, ticket income, and grants from federal, state and regional agencies and foundations.
Plan, organize, implement and evaluate A&L's presenting programs, activities and events that extend UC Santa Barbara's public service mission as a land grant University to the community through cultural programs. Ensure campus goals and operational objectives are achieved.
Provide artistic vision, program and overall policy direction for the University's presenting program of touring professional artists and speakers.
Oversee and develop eight programmatic units within the Arts & Lectures' Program (1) Presenting Program, (2) Development/Fundraising, (3) Education and Outreach, (4) Marketing and Communications, (5) Business Services, (6) Audience Services/Box Office (7) Technology (8) Viva el Arte.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
- 10 years of significant demonstrated success in curating and programming in an established arts presenting organization, preferably university and/or arts-based
- Driver's license
- Advanced knowledge / skills in financial management and administration, including skill to identify financial needs and create, implement, maintain and effectively control budgets and expenditures.
- Experience in personnel management and administration, including skill to identify staffing needs, select, hire, train and evaluate staff, and take corrective action as required.
- Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
- 7-9 years of progressive management experience
- Advanced knowledge of the campus, including its mission, vision, goals, objectives, infrastructure and achievements.
- Advanced verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, including highly developed political acumen and ability to successfully interact with diverse publics, including students, staff, artists, patrons, donors, etc.
- Advanced knowledge / skills in all aspects of management of a broad-based performing and / or fine arts organization.
- Required to hold a valid driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies and procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:
Presenting Program (35%): Work with the Associate Executive Director to create a season that incorporates a broad historical and cultural perspective of world-class artists, ensembles, speakers, authors and writers. Negotiate contracts, prepare budgets and develop strategic long-term plans core to Arts & Lecture's mission to ensure financial success. Work with other members of the Major University Presenting (MUP) organizations as well as other non-profit performing arts organizations to commission new work. Work with members of the academic community to integrate the productions of the presenting program with the educational mission of the university. Provide overall creative direction for the development of an annual performing arts, lecture and film season that reflects a commitment to the high artistic standards, cultural diversity, and support of the academic mission of the campus.
Development/ Fundraising (35%): Work with the Senior Director of Development to oversee all major fundraising activities, including high end donor identification, cultivation and stewardship. As the face of the organization, the Executive Director provides the overall fundraising direction, strategy and case for support for Arts & Lectures. Responsible for the stewardship and solicitation of major gifts and primary point of contact for all 7-figure donors as well as the influential Arts and Lectures Advisory Council. Responsible to ensure $3-4 million is raised annually in the department.
Program Direction (30%): Work with the Director of Education and Community Engagement to liaison with university and community organizations regarding the presentation of lectures and performing arts programs for university, elementary and secondary schools including student matinees, artists in the schools, master classes, as well as post and pre-performance lectures.
Work with UCSB departments, to fully integrate Arts & Lectures series with the overall academic program and mission of the university. Negotiate fees with artists/speakers to have them stay in longer residencies to have greater impact during the visits.
Work with the Director of Education and Community Engagement to develop special initiatives in the arts for underachieving elementary and secondary schools and establish guidelines for arts education program curriculum and evaluation tools.
Work with the Associate Executive Director and Marketing Manager to oversee the marketing activities of the Arts & Lectures program to establish awareness of events and programs including event promotion, public relations, and brand development utilizing electronic, print and outdoor media.
Work with the Associate Executive Director to oversee the development and implementation of audience development activities with special emphasis on student and multicultural community audience participation. Work with the Associate Executive Director and Marketing Manager to ensure Social Media is a priority in all communication efforts, with all audience members, and that return on investment of dollars is responsible.
Work with the Chief Financial and Operating Officer to manage the business and financial affairs of Arts & Lectures, in accordance with University policy and procedures, as a quasi-self-supporting unit, to ensure organizational effectiveness in strategic communications, financial and human resource management. For personnel, budget and management, the Executive Director directs organizational structure and staffing plans, including managing employees, fostering a positive workplace culture, keeping high moral and ensuring effective communications throughout the team.
Work with the Marketing Manager to serve as a campus resource in the management of special events and the planning of cultural programs. Oversee patron service policies and practices that will enhance the department's ability to serve patrons and enhance the university's public image.
Work with the Business Systems Analyst and ITS to maintain a level of technology that supports the adequate running of the Arts & Lectures servers and computers.
Work with Director of Education and Community Engagement to strengthen and manage the 10-year Viva el Arte program that serves Santa Barbara's Latino communities with free public performances in accessible community venues and free educational outreach to low-income families residing in Guadalupe, Isla Vista and Santa Barbara's Eastside. This is a nationally award-winning program that serves the low income residents within the County; Executive Director is responsible to secure the annual budget and maintain the commitment to serve the particular demographic that is educational outreach targets.
