Pay Rate/Range: The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $77,000 - $90,000/yr. The full salary range for this position is $77,000 - $139,200/yr. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University.

Working Days and Hours: M-F, 8 am - 5 pm

Department Marketing Statement: The National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) at UCSB seeks a geospatial software developer to further develop a geospatial classification platform for a project focused on using remotely sensed imagery to monitor iceplant (Carpobrotus edulis) infestations, which threaten biodiversity. This project aims to create a rapid, scalable approach utilizing advanced machine learning models to monitor and assess the distribution and changes in invasive iceplant at the Jack and Laura Dangermond Preserve, a 24,460-acre nature preserve in Santa Barbara County managed by The Nature Conservancy.

The geospatial software developer will work collaboratively with a dynamic project team of scientists at NCEAS to drive this impactful conservation project forward. The geospatial software developerTheir main responsibility will be enhancing the currently used geospatial classification platform (similar to a geographical version of the segment anything model) and securely deploy it for internal use through NCEAS cyberinfrastructure.

Required Qualifications:

* Bachelor's in Data Science, Geography, Computer Science, Environmental Science, or a related STEM discipline
* 1-3 years Experience in software development, data science, geography, computer science, or GIS.
* 1-3 years Experience with front-end technologies (e.g. HTML, CSS, JavaScript) for web-based applications
* 1-3 years Experience with geospatial and remote sensing data concepts and techniques.

Preferred Qualifications:

* An ability to understand the needs of a research group and how the existing computing infrastructure can support those needs
* Experience in Python development with frameworks such as Django, Flask, or FastAPI.
* Knowledge of secure software development
* Knowledge of secure web application development practices, including authorization systems (e.g., OAuth2) and vulnerability types (e.g., XSS, CSRF, etc.)
* Experience with open source geospatial data visualization frameworks, such as CesiumJS, Mapbox, and Leaflet.
* Experience with open-source tools and APIs for geospatial analysis (e.g. GDAL, rasterio Python package).
* Experience working with remotely sensed data such as Planet or NAIP
* Experience with deep learning (e.g. semantic segmentation, neural networks) and frameworks such as scikit-learn, PyTorch, and TensorFlow and applying these skills to address environmental or geospatial challenges.
* Advanced skills associated with software design, modification, implementation and deployment.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

25% Design, application and development of geospatial analysis platforms: Under general direction, design, develop, and test both existing and new geospatial data applications, including geospatial data visualization, annotation, and modeling features : Under general direction, designs, implements, tests, and maintains innovative web-based, desktop-based, and server-based scientific software systems for the management and analysis of ecological and environmental data and metadata, including front-end web design and development of web service interfaces. These systems include multiple software tools supporting a global network of data services used daily by many thousands of scientists worldwide.

25% Integration: Integrate and deploy these geospatial data applications on NCEAS systems, ensuring the system is scalable, secure, and capable of efficient geospatial data processing

25% Collaboration: Collaborate with the project team to refine and enhance the geospatial application, making it user-friendly and efficient for visualizing, processing, and analyzing GIS data.

25% Documentation: Document code and processes for other developers to effectively interpret, use, and extend the software systems
