This position works remotely requiring a telecommuting agreement and adherence to the UCSC Telecommuting/Remote Work Guidelines. The employee shall be available in a full-time capacity during assigned telecommuting work hours (specific hours to be discussed with supervisor). While telecommuting/remote working, the employee is responsible for ensuring a worksite environment suitable for accomplishing their regular job duties during scheduled hours of work and, if applicable, arranging for dependent care just as they would if they were working at the regular UCSC worksite.

NOTIFICATIONS

UC Vaccination Policy: With limited exceptions, COVID-19 vaccinations are required for Covered Individuals under the Policy. Covered Individuals include all employees, students, or trainees who physically access a University facility or program in connection with their employment, appointment, or education/training.

Covered Individuals do NOT include employees who work 100% remotely with NO expectation that they will physically access any University location or program at ANY time. If 100% remote work ends, the employee is subject to policy.

The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) is a public agency supported by 15 members (13 states, one territory and the Bureau of Indian Education). Through the work of thousands of educators, Smarter Balanced created an online assessment system aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), as well as tools for educators to improve teaching and learning. Smarter Balanced is housed at the University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC) Silicon Valley Extension. Our work is guided by the belief that a high-quality assessment system can provide information and tools for teachers and schools to improve instruction and help students succeed - regardless of disability, language, or subgroup. JOB SUMMARY

Independently oversees a comprehensive communications program for a unit or school with moderately complex communications requirements. The communications program usually includes written, visual, digital and electronic communications. Works with management to develop and execute organizational communication and market branding strategy. Designs and implements information campaigns.

The communications specialist serves as a collaborative team member of the communications and member services teams in a remote context to support external communication projects and to facilitate member related events and correspondence. The incumbent utilizes organizational skills and attention to detail to manage and track multiple tasks with limited supervision.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Salary Information: Salary Range: $68,400 - $97,114 / Annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES

10% - Works with management and members to develop, and implement long and short term strategic communications plans and / or projects.

20% - Coordinates communications materials, including written, visual, digital, and electronic communications.

15% - Supports implementation of effective systems for managing information, projects and communications to ensure accurate and timely responses. Identifies specific communications needs and develops the content and process for organizational improvements.

15% - Coordinates and tracks information from other teams to ensure completion and sufficient time for leadership review in advance of project due dates.

10% - Maintains and updates technical documents and Content Management Systems (CMS).

15% - Coordinates team's business activities including scheduling, travel planning, meeting coordination for Consortium and team events, and committee and advisory groups.

10% - Assists with event planning including site selection, logistics, and working with vendors on event planning, scheduling, and site preparation.

5% - Performs specific projects or assignments.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Skilled in organizational communication with an ability to streamline processes and workflows, tools and resources.
  • Knowledge and understanding of technical applications to effectively support technical staff, or personally perform technical work, including various media, and applications.
  • Experience with common productivity tools (Adobe, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Sharepoint, One Drive) and video conferencing software.
  • Solid written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills.
  • Extensive knowledge and skills scheduling across teams and timezones and with external partners.
  • Experience monitoring and tracking activities of a project with the goal of completing the project on schedule and within budget constraints.
  • Knowledge of event coordination and planning, including logistics, site selection, contracting and vendor relations.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's in Communication or Journalism
  • Communications, Computer Systems and Technology, Office Management
  • Knowledge of the organization, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, policies, and practices.
  • Knowledge of location protocols and channels for communication internally and externally.
  • Basic copyedit skills and proof-reading skills.
  • Experience with creating accesible print and web-based materials.


SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Ability to work remotely from a home office and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
  • Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
  • Ability to work occasional nights, weekends and/or holidays.
  • Ability to travel nationally when required.
