Percent time: 75% time.

Position Description


Distinguished Professor Karen Holl in the Environmental Studies Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz invites applications for a junior specialist position focusing on GIS and survey data management for a study of global reforestation efforts. The study includes a survey of how well over 100 global conservation organizations comply with best practices for tree growing and analysis of the effect of these projects on forest cover change (http://www.holl-lab.com/improving-tree-growing-campaigns.html). The position includes the following core functions.
  • 75% - GIS analyses - compiling spatial data from various sources and analyzing tree cover change over time as a function of various environmental and social variables.
  • 10% - Compiling and visualizing survey data.
  • 10% - Working with the research team on experimental design and disseminating research results in written and graphical formats.
  • 5% - Conducting literature and web searches for relevant information.
  • 5% - Communicating with conservation organizations to secure data

Applicants with the following areas of experience and qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Familiarity with various data products relevant to global tree cover, carbon storage, and climatic variables (e.g. Dynamic World V2, Planet, CHIRPS).
  • Experience working on team research projects.
  • Strong communication skills (writing and verbal).
  • Experience conducting literature and web searches.
  • Knowledge of reforestation best practices and ecological and social standards of restoration science.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at the time the application is submitted)
  • Bachelors degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in environmental studies, natural resource management, geographic information systems or a related field.
  • Experience using a combination of ArcGIS pro, Python, and R to process and analyze land cover change.
  • Experience managing large GIS and survey databases.
