Position overview

Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. The posted UCSC Salary Scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the scale titled, Represented Project _ (e.g., Scientist) Series Fiscal Year. A salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. A reasonable estimate for this position is $74,100-85,900.

Percent time: Full-time (100%)

Anticipated start: As soon as possible after the initial review of applications.

Position duration: Initial appointment will be for two years, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position Description


The Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics (SCIPP) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a Theory Project Scientist. SCIPP is an organized research unit within the University of California system. SCIPP's scientific and technical staff are and have been involved in several cutting-edge research projects for more than 25 years. The primary focus is experimental and theoretical particle physics and particle astrophysics, including the development of technologies needed to advance research in these areas.

Under the direction of Professor Stefano Profumo and in collaboration with Professors Wolfgang Altmannshofer and Stefania Gori, the scientist will conduct research in theoretical particle physics. These include physics beyond the standard model, astroparticle physics, and cosmology. Additionally, the scientist will be expected to publish in scientific journals, oversee students to help them to complete their research projects, and conduct independent research.

Applicants with any of the following qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:
  • Strong background in field theory and/or theory of elementary particles
  • Strong quantitative skills
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written)

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at the time the application is submitted)
  • Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in physics or a related field (e.g., theoretical physics, elementary particle physics, etc).
  • A minimum of five years post-Ph.D. research experience in theoretical physics.
