Position overview Position title: Visiting Assistant Professor: Lighting and Media
Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. A reasonable estimate for this position is $78,200 - $85,000.
Percent time: Full-time (100%)
Anticipated start: July 1, 2025, with the academic year beginning on September 20, 2025.
Position duration: Initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of reappointment for a second year. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position description

The Department of Performance, Play & Design, which includes the Theater Arts BA Program (THEA) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC), invites candidates working in theater and performance to apply for the position of Visiting Assistant Professor of Design specializing in lighting and media. This will be a "Clinical Professor in Design" focus with more fundamentals and practical work in their teaching.

We seek experienced, accomplished artists/scholars, preferably with teaching experience at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Visiting assistant professors are expected to engage in research or other creative activity, teaching, and university and public service. The successful candidate will be expected to serve as a full member of the Theater Arts Program and PPD Faculty and must be able to work with students, faculty, and staff from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. The department is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the inclusive excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, and/or service.

The ideal candidate would be proficient or familiar with the current software / technology in the program:

  • Primarily ETC Based Lighting Equipment
  • EOS Programming
  • Lighting Software & Hardware: Watchout (PC based media) & QLab (Mac based media)
  • Lighting Organization Software: LightWright & BeamWright
  • Wireless Lighting Technology & Fixtures
  • Drafting: VectorWorks

Responsibilities:

  • Teach four courses over a three-quarter academic year.
  • Mentor and advise undergraduate and graduate students, including overseeing independent projects and research.
  • Maintain a professional practice as research through designing for the Theater Art Quarterly Season. UC Santa Cruz is a Research 1 University and maintains an internationally recognized profile of creative research.
  • Contribute service to the department, Arts Division, and university at large, with a particular emphasis on building an equitable and inclusive community of lighting/media designers and contribute to our season.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at the time the application is submitted)
  • Terminal degree (MFA or PhD) in a field related to lighting and media design in technical theater (e.g., lighting design, projection design/video design, media design/digital scenography, stagecraft & technical direction, sound design, control systems & programming, scenic design, etc.) or a minimum of six years' creative practice in performance, play, and design. Equivalent foreign degrees will be considered.
  • Demonstrated record of teaching experience in higher education as evidenced by college-level teaching, college-level student mentorship, TA experience; facilitation of professional workshops or trainings, and/or guest lecturer/ guest artist appointments.
  • Record of research as evidenced by contributions to theater (devised, commercial, or resident/regional theater), dance, digital media, visual arts, opera, film, and/or TV; collaborations with directors or designers.
