Job Summary
This position is critical for the proper operation of the IND Animal Facility by ensuring daily need for equipment, equipment servicing, and over all facility needs are met. The purpose of this position is to provide full time facility support services such as operation of equipment (i.e. cage wash, autoclave, equipment maintenance, building maintenance, facility housekeeping), as well as technical support in animal care and husbandry (i.e. animal health and welfare checks, some cage changing, as well as husbandry related procedures) for small animal models used to study neurodegenerative diseases on an as needed basis. Proper training in the cage wash as well as animal handling and biosafety will be provided. Some holidays and weekends required.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.
Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
The salary range for this position is $20.16 - $27.13 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description
The UCSF Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases is entirely dedicated to research on neurodegenerative diseases such as multiple systems atrophy, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and Alzheimer's. Its animal facility houses one of the largest colony of animals involved in prion disease research in the world. It is also one of the largest transgenic facilities dedicated to a single group of diseases. It produces over 10,000 transgenic animals per year carrying diverse modifications of a single gene or multiple genes at once. Our mission is to find currently non-existent cures for these debilitating neurodegenerative diseases affecting large segments of the population. Our entire staff is dedicated to this mission, operating on the cutting-edge of science, while maintaining the highest standards of animal care and welfare. The IND is directed by Nobel Laureate Stanley Prusiner, MD.
Required Qualifications
- Graduation from high school; or an equivalent combination of education and experience and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position. In all of the above Minimum Qualifications, work experience evidencing reliability and the capacity to learn and assume responsibility for the routine animal care taking functions may be substituted for high school education, on the basis of one year of work experience for one year of education
- Ability to effectively and efficiently work well with other team-members in a high-throughput, dynamic, and physically-demanding environment
- Ability to effectively follow Standard Operating Procedures as it relates to Environmental Health and Safety procedures (i.e. proper use of Personal Protective Equipment)
- Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surface for up to seven hours / day
- Ability to push and pull heavy objects and ability to safely move and or lift heavy loads
- Physical Demands : requires standing, walking, squatting, bending, waist twisting, kneeling, crawling, lifting up to 20 lbs., carrying / pulling up to 60 lbs., pushing over 60 lbs., fine finger manipulation, gross manipulation, simple / power grasp, repetitive hand / arm use; exposure to dust, fumes or gases, chemicals or toxic substances, latex; verbal communication, operating motor vehicles, use of protective equipment
