Job Summary
The Industrial Hygiene (IH) Supervisor provides leadership and technical expertise for UCSF's clinical safety and industrial hygiene programs. Working from management's overarching objectives, the incumbent is expected to independently perform a wide spectrum of industrial hygiene services to include occupational exposure monitoring, indoor air quality investigations, hazard / risk assessments, local exhaust ventilation assessments, accident investigations, respirator fit testing, and direct these services as provided by staff. The IH Supervisor must be proficient in technical report writing and have the ability to explain complex topics to a wide-ranging audience across the UCSF campus and Medical Center communities, while monitoring and reviewing the work of subordinates. Additionally, the IH Supervisor is required to schedule and perform Environment of Care audits in accordance with Joint Commission accreditation requirements across UCSF Medical Center, which includes a working knowledge of fire / life safety, infection control, hazardous material management, and emergency management principles in health care.
The IH Supervisor monitors regulatory compliance and serves as an organizational liaison with external agencies. Problems faced are complex and require creation of new methodologies by application of professional knowledge, expertise and engagement of junior staff. The incumbent is often called upon to represent EH&S at meetings and conferences involving academic committees, campus functions, or UC wide working groups.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.
Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
The salary range for this position is $94,400 - $201,800 (Annual Rate).

Department Description
The UCSF Office of Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) provides safety and compliance guidance to all UCSF operations and facilities, including activities across both the Campus and the Health System. Under formal Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with both the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) and the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD), EH&S Fire Prevention staff perform plan review, construction inspections, existing building inspections and other work on behalf of OSFM and OSHPD, providing reviews and code enforcement on behalf of the agencies. Other EH&S staff provide expert consultation and other services related to bio-safety, chemical safety, radiation safety, workplace safety and ergonomics, industrial hygiene, environmental protection and spill response.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Life / Physical / Natural Sciences / Engineering / Industrial Hygiene or related area
- 5 years of more of industrial hygiene or directly related experience (Post BA / BS)
- Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of EH&S technical requirements, logistics, materials and operations, rules, regulations, laws, etc.
- Skills to effectively direct and supervise subordinate staff who are assigned duties in different programs; skills to effectively integrate several highly regulated subject and program areas. Req
- Solid written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills, including strong skills to interact successfully with a widely diverse population
- Solid skills to organize, prioritize and complete projects within budget and time constraints
- Solid skills to appropriately, efficiently and effectively respond to emergencies and critical situations
- Proficiency of Cal / OSHA, EPA, SFDPH, and TJC regulatory compliance
- Expertise in industrial hygiene and development of exposure monitoring programs
