Job Summary

Reporting to the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, the Vice Chancellor of Education and Student Affairs provides executive leadership and accountability for the direction, strategic planning, and operational management of campus-wide student academic affairs units as well as educational initiatives and resources that benefit all enrolled students, faculty, and staff in the UCSF Schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Graduate Division. The Vice Chancellor works collaboratively with the Deans and educational leadership of UCSF's four health professions schools and graduate division along with other members of the Chancellor's Cabinet to promote our commitment to Advancing Health Worldwide through innovative, collaborative, and interdisciplinary approaches for graduate and professional student education.

The Vice Chancellor's portfolio includes many student-centered departments and units - office of the registrar, financial aid and scholarships, student life and student mental health and wellbeing services. These programs and services are designed to support the academic success of UCSF students; foster their intellectual, personal, social, and professional development; and enhance the quality of campus life, the educational environment, and students' connections with the broader UCSF community, including alumni. They guide strategic vision for and oversight of cross-campus educational programs, such as educational space, campus teaching and learning technologies, inter-professional education, data and information technology and more. With the Deans and leaders of educational programs in the Schools and Graduate Divisions, they remain abreast of educational scholarship and advise the EVCP and Chancellor on optimizing the learning and teaching environment and educating the workforce our communities need.

Additionally, the VC serves as a core member of the EVCP's executive leadership team, contributing knowledge and expertise to guide the oversight of all academic missions, including research, education, faculty and student affairs and other support units.

M-F, 8-5; hybrid (onsite at least 4 days / week.)

Department Description

The VC's office collaborates with other UC campuses to address systemwide challenges related to student needs, interests, and issues, ranging from early outreach through graduation, housing, health care, physical and emotional wellness, recreation, and student organizations, and union activity impact, among other services.

The Office of Education and Student Affairs encompasses nearly 9 defined departments or units with operational budgets of $39 million annually and a student scholarship, grant, and loan program of over $105M. The Office of Education and Student Affairs is served by approximately 80 professional staff and student employees.

Required Qualifications

  • At least 7 years of progressive strategic and operational experience as an educational leader in a health professions School or College
  • Deep understanding of and passion for student academic affairs and graduate and health professions education.
  • An outstanding track record of high academic accomplishment in health professions education, with and established reputation for creativity, leadership, decision-making and integrity. This track record includes operational management, launching new programs, effectively leading change management, educational administration and contributions to educational scholarship.
  • Excellent communication and conflict resolution skills, including the ability to quickly establish trust and rapport, foster consensus, promote collaboration, and facilitate effective teamwork.
  • Exceptional political acumen and experience managing multiple stakeholder agendas. Demonstrated success in problem solving and navigating a complex environment with constant change and ambiguity.
  • Experience in building productive, collaborative relationships across Schools and stakeholder groups.
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting underrepresented students and championing inclusive excellence.
  • Proven ability to successfully plan, implement and deliver strategic results while maintaining the flexibility to respond quickly to changes in the environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in ensuring accreditation success.
  • A professional degree in a health professions field (medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy or PT) and administrative and research experience in an academic setting is required as is demonstrated scholarly distinction.
  • Must be eligible for appointment at the level of Professor.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in fundraising and development / alumni relations is preferred.
  • Success with leading large-scale change initiatives in a complex organization
  • Knowledge of student due process policies and procedures, conflict resolution strategies, and skill in mediating disputes.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and managing large budgets in a resource-constrained environment.
  • Demonstrated record of accomplishment in advocating and incorporating the policy and program needs of a complex, multi-unit organization into the broader organization-wide / corporate-wide plans and programs.
  • Demonstrated experience in successful crisis management
