School of Music Overview:

The UCO School of Music has a current faculty of 32 full-time (of which 24 are tenured or tenure-track positions) and approximately 35 part-time faculty, combined with a full-time professional staff of 8.  There are approximately 300 students enrolled in degree programs that include the BA, BM, BME, and MM, within the framework of six divisions: Jazz Studies, Musical Theatre, Piano, Strings (Orchestras), Vocal Arts (Choirs and Opera), and Winds/Percussion (Bands). Job Description:

The University of Central Oklahoma seeks a full-time Assistant Professor of Voice (tenure track) to teach applied voice at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful candidate will excel at teaching applied voice in multiple styles, including classical and contemporary commercial technique with a special focus on musical theatre.  The successful candidate will also recruit and retain students, support student research and creative activity, and contribute to a collaborative faculty.  They may teach other courses depending on expertise including:  Opera Workshop, Opera Production, Singing Diction, Art Song Literature and other voice-related courses as appropriate.  It is preferred but not required that candidates will have a tenor singing voice.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge and experience in the field of applied vocal teaching in both classical and contemporary commercial vocal technique, including teaching musical theatre styles and belting.
  • Ability to perform in both classical and musical theatre styles as a singer.
  • Ability to teach effectively in a classroom setting.
  • Ability to conduct research/scholarly/creative activities and provide service to the School of Music as needed/assigned.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate students effectively.
  • Ability to work within a collaborative faculty environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
  • Ability to work effectively and patiently with students.
  • Ability to recruit and retain students.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Tenor voice preferred.
  • Some piano skills are preferred.
  • Additional area(s) of musical expertise, which could include stage directing, music directing, vocal pedagogy, collaborative piano, or choral conducting.

Required Education and Experience:

  • A doctoral degree in music.  ABD may be considered.
  • A strong background in vocal performance and pedagogy.
  • Evidence of professional performing experience.
  • A minimum of 3 years of college teaching experience, including evidence of teaching applied voice at the collegiate level.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • 5 years of college teaching experience.
