General Schedule
Position typically works 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, one Saturday per month, and occasional evenings.
Position Overview
The Program Manager, Upward Bound Central Prep works with low-income, first-generation, or academically disadvantaged high school students to help them develop the skills needed to become successful college students. The Program Manager works to provide opportunities for Upward Bound Central Prep participants to develop academic skills, social skills, cultural competence, and study skills appropriate for their educational goals. The Program Manager assists in planning, organizing, and presenting group workshops, planning and supervising participants attendance at cultural events, and assists with the recruitment, selection, and retention process for all participants.
The continuation of this position is dependent on external funding.
Department Specific Essential Job Functions
Works with low-income, first-generation, or academically disadvantaged high school students to develop the skills needed to become successful college students by assisting them in the development of appropriate educational goals, guiding them in decision-making and learning how to accept responsibility for their decisions, directing them to resources that assist in making career and academic major choices, and providing opportunities to develop social skills, cultural competence, study skills, and writing skills. Plans and organizes and supervises tutoring services at target schools, Saturday Academies. Plans and organizes events and trips designed to help develop cultural competence. Recruits and helps select participants. Coordinates yearly assessment and standardized testing of all participants, updates Education Plans, monitors participant grades and provides academic advising and other support services to participants. Ensures the effectiveness of the academic process by maintaining participant files, regularly updating academic reports, and validating the information contained in the participant files with the student database. Determines appropriate activities and allocations for individual budget line items by project scope. Evaluates services provided to students to determine effectiveness and progress toward project goals. Collaborates with campus and community stakeholders to improve project services and outcomes. Completes Annual Performance Report and submits to the US Department of Education. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications Required
Bachelor's degree in education, teaching, social work, psychology, or a related field is required
At least five years of experience developing and providing college preparatory instruction, tutoring, academic advising, assessment, standardized testing, and/or enrichment activities is required.
Must have a valid driver's license, clean driving record, and be able to operate a typical motor vehicle.
Qualifications Preferred
Master's degree is preferred
Experience in a high education setting with demonstrated administrative experience with program development or project management is preferred. Experience working with Upward Bound, other TRIO programs, or other programs focused on students who are low-income, first-generation, or academically disadvantaged is preferred. Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds is preferred.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Excellent interpersonal skills, organizational, and management skills are required. The ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and high school counselors. Knowledgeable of computer applications including but not limited to Microsoft Office applications is required.
