About The Department

The Office of Institutional Analysis (IA), located in the Office of the Provost, plays the central role at the University in managing information and data. IA manages an extensive portfolio of student, employee, alumni, and other population surveys, using the results to inform strategy and policy decisions across the institution.

Job Summary

The Associate Director for Survey Research manages the range of survey activity conducted by the Office of Institutional Analysis, as well as related work such as qualitative data collection via focus groups. The Associate Director works with other units and offices at the University, and with consortium partners, to ensure that surveys are conducted in an organized and effective way, and takes the lead role in designing and deploying surveys, as well as analyzing and sharing results. The Associate Director manages colleagues performing survey work in IA, overseeing and guiding survey work conducted by staff analysts and student workers. The Associate Director also collaborates with analysts in other units to support and guide survey research in a decentralized reporting environment. The Associate Director uses knowledge in statistics, trend analysis, regression, and data visualization to provide insight into survey data, and review and correct analytical work conducted by others, and situates the results obtained from survey analysis and other qualitative data in the broader context of strategic data analysis conducted by IA. The Associate Director performs data governance work to ensure that confidential survey data are handled appropriately.

Responsibilities

  • Manages all survey and related research activity in the Office of Institutional Analysis (IA).
  • Supervises survey-focused staff analysts and student workers in IA.
  • Acts as the key central resource in managing survey activity at the University.
  • Collaborates with other units to regulate the use of surveys in a decentralized environment.
  • Collaborates with consortium partners on shared survey design, analysis, and data governance.
  • Develops strategic research questions related to University priorities, and applies survey methodology to those questions.
  • Performs data analysis, and oversees the work of analysts in IA, to respond to University inquiries on survey data, using statistical methods such as trend analysis and regression.
  • Independently assesses the quality and limitations of the existing survey portfolio, and develops strategies for overcoming these limitations.
  • Communicates results of survey analysis to senior University leadership.
  • Performs and oversees other data analysis work as needed.
  • Develops and communicates program priorities and performance standards and assesses operations using these criteria. Plans and conducts quality assurance reviews and recommends changes as appropriate.
  • Has a deep understanding when interacting with faculty, researchers and staff for committee work or information.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Education:

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Education:

  • Advanced degree.

Experience:

  • Working in a higher education setting.
  • Microsoft Office Suite competency, particularly Excel and PowerPoint.

Preferred Competencies

  • Managing a complex survey portfolio, including subject recruitment among different population types (students, employees, external community members, etcetera).
  • Managing other analysts, reviewing work, and providing feedback.
  • Independently developing and responding to research questions.
  • Using software packages such as Stata, SPSS, or R for predictive modeling and policy evaluation.
  • Self-motivated, curious, and comfortable working independently and within a team.
  • Excellent analytical, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Capable of managing multiple tasks and deadlines.
