Job Summary

The University of Colorado Boulder encourages applications for an International Student and Scholar Assistant Advisor or Advisor! As a member of the International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) team, this position is responsible for direct advising of, and preparing documents for, international students and scholars in regards to U.S. immigration matters and providing advice, assistance and/or resources regarding academic, housing, financial, cultural adjustment, social, career, research, and other related matters. In summary, this position is expected to prepare visa applications for, as well as engage in, direct advising of international students and scholars. The level of supervision and oversight provided will depend upon the classification level of the position.
ISSS facilitates the entry, success, and retention of approximately 2200 international students and 800 international scholars. Our team advocates on behalf of international students and scholars (both within the university and to U.S. federal agencies) to ensure that they are afforded every opportunity to complete their educational, research, and/or professional objectives. We provide educational, social, and cultural programs that foster the integration and success of the international population on campus and in the local community. Who We Are

International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) facilitates the entry, success, and retention of approximately 2200 international students and 800 international scholars. Our team advocates on behalf of international students and scholars (both within the university and to U.S. federal agencies) to ensure that they are afforded every opportunity to complete their educational, research, and/or professional objectives. We provide educational, social, and cultural programs that foster the integration and success of the international population on campus and in the local community. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Advising, Visa Document Preparation, & Reporting:
  • Advise and educate international students, international scholars (including short-term visitors, postdoctoral fellows, academic and research faculty, and staff), and academic and functional units on U.S. immigration rules and related institutional policies.
  • Provide direct, comprehensive advising to international students and scholars in regards to complex issues not only related to immigration but also related academic, logistical, financial, health, travel, and career development issues.
  • Assist students and scholars in adjusting to life at the university and in the U.S. including advising on campus academic and personal support resources, clubs and organizations on campus, on and off campus employment, applications for Social Security Numbers, state driver’s licenses, etc.
  • Research, interpret, and apply federal and institutional rules and policies to the specific situations of international students in F-1 or J-1 non-immigrant status and international scholars in J-1, H-1B, E-3, TN, or O-1 status.
  • Communicate with state and federal government agencies such as the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles and the U.S. Social Security Administration on behalf of international students and scholars.
  • Serve as official liaison to federal government agencies as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO), ensuring compliance with immigration regulations.
  • Authorize immigration benefits for international students and scholars in the SEVIS federal database.
  • Monitor, report, and submit required information and documentation to federal governmental agencies via SEVIS and sunapsis.
  • Prepare and submit appropriate employment-based visa and permanent residency applications to federal government agencies on behalf of the university.
  • Mentor less experienced International Student & Scholar Advisors in internal practices and procedures. (Not applicable to assistant level advisor position).
Programs/Events Planning, Mentorship for Student Clubs, & Liaison with Community Groups:
  • Design, coordinate, and implement programs, workshops, and events for the international students, scholars, and their families to cultivate an inclusive community and assist with their integration and success academically, socially, and culturally on campus and in the local community. (Event planning includes budgeting and fiscal accountability; negotiating for time, space, resources, catering, etc.; marketing; implementation; and attendance).
  • Collaborate with other campus units, including but not limited to the Counseling and Psychiatric Services; Office of Diversity, Equity and Community Engagement; Career Services; and the Recreation Center in creating and implementing programs, events, workshops, day trips, etc. that will enhance the international student and/or scholar experience related to academics, career building, social integration, cultural adjustment, etc.
  • Lead and/or assist with international student orientation planning with committee, serve as mentor for student and/or scholar groups (such as but not limited to International Festival committee, CU International club, and International Peer Mentor program) and/or primary liaison for community organizations (such as Boulder Friends of International Students).
Advocacy & Outreach:
  • Advocate for international students and scholars on campus as appropriate.
  • Provide training and guidance to campus constituents as needed to support international students and scholars, facilitate campus integration, and ensure positive interactions.
  • Develop, plan, and conduct workshops delivered in person or via other methods to educate on current U.S. immigration regulations and compliance as well as matters integral to the success of international students and scholars on campus such as but not limited to intercultural differences.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with schools and colleges regarding the immigration requirements for their international students, faculty, staff, scholars and exchange visitors.
  • Act as a liaison for international students and scholars with the Bursar’s Office, Office of the Registrar, Office of Human Resources, and other units on campus as needed.
Administrative and Other :
  • Assist with projects within the ISSS office to enhance efficiency and customer service, e.g. website revisions, development of internal processes and communications such as handouts and forms, creating and giving presentations to campus community, social media updates, etc.
  • Serve as member of internal ISSS committees and taskforces.
  • Participate in weekly case management meetings, ISSS team meetings, new international student orientation, etc.
  • Engage in professional development and compliance training opportunities.
  • Train, assign work and supervise student worker(s).
  • Actively engage in the growth of ISSS diversity and inclusion efforts through appropriate trainings, outreach, and initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • To be a Designated School Official (DSO) and/or Alternate Responsible Office (ARO), per federal regulations, incumbent must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. lawful permanent resident.
  • International Student & Scholar Assistant Advisor:
    • Experience as an international student and/or scholar advisor (or similar position) at an institution of higher education or as an immigration paralegal or legal assistant. The experience must include: assisting international students and/or scholars with at least one (1) of the three (3) following types of visas: F-1, J-1, and H-1B or mentoring and/or event planning for international students and/or scholars in a professional environment.
    Applicants with similar experience as a student employee in an International Student & Scholar Services office (or similar office) will be considered.
    • International Student & Scholar Advisor
      • One (1) year of work experience as an international student and scholar advisor (or similar position) as a DSO and/or ARO at an institution of higher education or as an immigration paralegal or legal assistant. The experience must demonstrate the ability to use knowledge of the regulations and good judgement to independently advise international students and scholars with at least one (1) of the three (3) following types of visas: F-1, J-1, and H-1B.

What You Will Need

  • Knowledge and understanding of U.S. immigration laws, regulations, and agency policies.
  • Sensitivity to and ability to operate in a cross-cultural setting.
  • **Depending on programming needs, ability to work evenings and weekends outside of the normal 40-hour per week is required. Given that this is an exempt position under the FLSA, compensatory pay will not be awarded. Any administrative leave/time off is discretionary for hours worked above 40 hours per work week.**

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Knowledge of sunapsis and PeopleSoft Campus Solutions.
  • International Student & Scholar Advisor:
  • Experience independently advising on two (2) of the three (3) following types of visas: F-1, J-1, and H-1B or
  • Experience in mentoring and/or event planning for international students and/or scholars.
