Facilities Management at CU Boulder encourages applications for a Solid Waste and Recycling CDL Equipment Operator! This position collects solid waste, compost and automated recycling collections using a front load trash vehicle and rear load vehicles.

Responsibilities

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Solid Waste & Automated Recycling Collections

Collect solid waste from trash dumpsters by operating a front loader trash truck (3-axle). Clean, repair, or replace dumpsters if needed and during student breaks (spring, summer, winter). Occasionally cube vans or automated rear load vehicles will be used for collections.

Collect recyclables from polycarts in the Housing areas of campus using the residential cart tipper package on the trash truck. Clean, replace or repair polycarts and ensure polycarts are accurately labeled by material type. Perform major cleaning and repairing of containers during student breaks.

Materials Delivery

Deliver solid waste/compost to established landfill, properly eject the load, and clean compactor area of truck. Deliver recyclables to established processing facility, eject load, and clean compactor area of truck.

Vehicle and Equipment Maintenance

Perform daily preventive maintenance on vehicles by checking fluid levels, cleaning out vehicle body, checking seals, brakes and lubricating zirk points, and performing other Department of Transportation required inspections.

Automated Compost Collections

Collect compost from polycarts and dumpsters from various locations across campus using rear load vehicles. Occasionally remove contaminates. Clean, replace and repair any polycart or dumpster as needed and ensure bins are labeled accurately. Occasionally front load or cube van vehicles are used for collections.

Data Collection

Use route sheets and other record keeping tools to verify collection of solid waste. Note the time and quantity of material collected. Record problems with the collection of material or container damage. Report damage or contamination to supervisor.

What You Should Know

  • The anticipated schedule for this in-person position is four 10 hour shifts, rotating every three months. Rotations are Friday - Monday, Monday-Thursday, or Tuesday-Friday. May be required to work overtime or off hours based on campus needs.
  • This role is eligible for our Facilities Management Employee Referral Program .

What We Can Offer

  • The annual salary rate for this position is $54,960.
  • If you have prior state-classified experience in the same class series as this position, your pay may be set at a higher amount per the state Step Pay Program implemented on July 1, 2024.

What We Require

  • Must be a Colorado resident to apply.
  • Three years experience operating equipment appropriate to the work assignment.
  • Must possess a valid Colorado Commercial Driver’s License with Class B endorsement.
  • Must have current DOT medical card.
  • Ability to pass a DOT prescreen physical within 30 days of hire if needed.

  • Knowledge of mechanical proficiency and strong customer service skills.

  • Ability to work well within a team environment, possess collaboration skills, and reliability.

Essential Services

This position is designated “essential services.” The incumbent is required to respond to requests for work during campus emergencies (snow, wind, rain, flood and any other natural or man-made event) and report to work for his / her regularly assigned shift during emergency campus closures.
