The Division of Student Affairs is accepting applications for the Student Insights Strategist position! The Student Affairs Office of Planning, Assessment & Data Analytics facilitates a culture of data-informed continuous improvement in the Division of Student Affairs that is based in equity-centered assessment practices. We support the Division of Student Affairs in the planning, implementing, and reporting of meaningful data collection and analysis to inform and enhance programs, services, and physical spaces in alignment with both the division’s and campus’ strategic priorities. We serve the CU Boulder campus community as experts in student development and co-curricular assessment practices and student experiences.

The Student Insights Strategist is responsible for the robust development, collection, analysis, interpretation, and visualization of varied complex institutional and cocurricular data sets relevant to the strategic goals of the Division of Student Affairs. The Insights Strategist will partner with campus experts to identify and analyze existing quantitative and qualitative data sets as well as assist with campus-wide surveys sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs including design and administration, data analysis, reporting, and visualization for use by a broad range of campus and community constituents. This position also serves as a campus expert on Student Affairs data and is a key player in empowering data-informed decision making and continuous improvement processes in the Division and throughout all levels of the university related to student development, the co-curricular experience, and student success (e.g. grade point average, retention, graduation). As a campus expert in these areas, the Insights Strategist will also collaborate on Division and campus level assessment and research projects on topics of interest to the Division of Student Affairs and inform the Division and institution of best practices related to valid and reliable measurement of student development and success outcomes.

Who We Are

The Division of Student Affairs consists of 30 departments that provide student support and services dedicated to helping students become successful, curious, competent individuals during their time at CU Boulder.

Student Affairs Financial Planning and Reporting is a centralized service center for the Division of Student Affairs that provides support in all financial and accounting areas. Staff collaborate with departments to understand their operational processes in order to best advise them on appropriate accounting and financial practices. They assist with budget planning and financial management, financial reporting and analysis, billing and invoicing services and more.

Responsibilities

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Data Collection & Analysis & Reporting

  • Identify and develop valid and reliable instruments necessary for measuring progress toward Student Affairs’ goals and outcomes at both the division and unit levels
  • Collect, clean, manage, analyze, and synthesize quantitative and qualitative data sets including division sponsored surveys and other institutional data sources
  • Manages in-depth statistical analysis identifying differences and correlations in survey responses with respect to demographic categories and information; identifies correlations between CU Student Affairs data and national data; performs longitudinal studies to identify Student Affairs initiatives that have the greatest impact on student development and success

Visualization & Reporting

  • Develop interactive dashboards to provide insights and make recommendations to a broad range of campus and community constituents, including technical and non-technical audiences
  • Use advanced data visualization techniques to provide concise and compelling insights and summaries of findings in reports and presentations
  • Assist in the development of outcome reporting, including various reports, presentations, and publications to share with a wide range of division, campus, and community audiences
  • In coordination with the Office of Data and Analytics and the Director of Planning, Assessment & Data Analytics, maintains internal Tableau Server folder instance for all Division of Student Affairs data visualizations
  • Establish standards and best practices for all Division of Student Affairs visualizations to deliver a consistent experience

Research & Assessment

  • Serve as lead administrator and insights specialist for Student Affairs sponsored surveys
  • Conduct research and quality improvement assessments using advanced statistical methods to measure impact of Student Affairs efforts on student development and success outcomes
  • In collaboration with Division of Student Affairs and campus partners, identify and/or develop empirical questions to measure the co-curricular experience, student development and student success outcomes
  • Identify relevant data sets within the division and university to inform Student Affairs unit and Division priorities and planning related to policy, programming, and strategic goals
  • Combine quantitative and qualitative data collected by Student Affairs with relevant institutional records and other data sets such as those from the Office of Data and Analytics, Institutional Research, and various academic colleges, schools, and programs
  • Work with nationally benchmarked data (e.g., NSSE, NACUFS) to benchmark CU Boulder against peer institutions
  • Assist with trainings and presentations of major research and assessment findings
  • Stay current on campus policies and procedures as they relate to data security and FERPA. Follow policies to ensure that the sensitive data, with which this person is entrusted, is protected from unauthorized disclosure or other improper use

Project Coordination & Support

  • Collaborate with campus partners such as the Office of Data and Analytics, First-Year Experience Advisory Board, Undergraduate Student Success and others on co-curricular assessment and research projects
  • Support Director in coordinating logistics for Student Affairs planning and necessary campus accreditation reporting tasks
  • Serve as Planning, Assessment & Data Analytics representative on division and campus committees and projects as needed

Student Staff Supervision, Training & Development

  • Provide training and supervision to Planning, Assessment & Data Analytics Student Staff regarding appropriate data collection, analysis, and visualization practices

What You Should Know

The working hours for this position are Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm. Typical modality schedule is 3 days in the office on campus and 2 days remote.

What We Can Offer

  • The salary range for this position is $70,000-$74,715 annually

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s degree that emphasizes quantitative skills and research methods. Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute
  • 1 year of job-related experience
  • Professional experience in assessment and/or research within social or behavioral sciences
  • Experience in survey design and standard methodologies for using an online survey platform like Qualtrics
  • Experience creating engaging data visualizations and dashboards using software such as Tableau or Power BI

What You Will Need

  • Ability to conduct quantitative data collection and analysis using advanced statistical techniques with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to conduct qualitative data collection and analysis and integrate findings with quantitative data through mixed-methods and multi-methods assessment and research practice
  • Ability to interpret data findings and generate insights to make programming and policy strategy recommendations based on assessment findings and research relevant to the Division of Student Affairs
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to present abstract concepts and findings in a meaningful way to non-technical audiences
  • Strong organization skills and ability to effectively handle multiple projects on tight schedules
  • Self-direction and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and a willingness and ability to learn additional software as vital and appropriate
  • Proficiency in a statistical software or programming language (such as R, SAS, SPSS, Stata, JMP, Minitab, Statistica, Python)
  • Proficiency in data visualization software such as MS Power BI and Tableau
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Graduate degree that emphasizes quantitative skills and research methods in social or behavioral sciences
  • Professional experience in higher education, preferably in student affairs or an assessment related office
  • Experience designing assessment plans, including writing learning and development outcomes and determining appropriate measurements
  • Experience with mixed-methods and/or multi-methods assessment or research practice
  • Experience with equity-centered assessment and research practices
  • Experience working with strategic plans
  • Experience with Institutional Review Board (IRB) processes
