Job Summary:
The Department of Surgery (DOS) is seeking a full-time Scientific Grant Writer/Editor. This position leverages insights acquired from graduate education, training, and hands-on experience with NIH and other national sponsors’ grant requirements and review processes to provide leadership to teams of investigators and guide the writing, editing, and reviewing of complex, multi-project, team science grant proposals. This role consults with investigators to: align their teams’ Scope of Work with funding opportunity announcements; develop research proposal narratives to align with sponsor intent; guide proposal preparation, drafting administrative components and editing/critiquing scientific components; collaborate with the School of Medicine (SOM) PreAward Shared Services (PASS) team to develop timelines and general management of proposal development processes; and assist with the planning and coordination of internal and external review processes undertaken in preparation of major grant submissions.

- Collaborate with large and diverse investigator teams to write, review, and refine biomedical research grants.
- Partner with investigators to craft detailed narratives for both technical and non-technical aspects of grants.
- This includes: specific aims; research strategies (covering significance, innovation, and approach); education and outreach plans; data management and sharing; administrative cores; components on the protection of human subjects; inclusion of women, minorities, and diverse age groups; protection of vertebrate animals; and other requirements as outlined in the funding opportunity announcement.
- Advise investigators on best strategies to convey effectively the significance, innovation, and impact of their research plan.
- Provide constructive feedback to investigators to improve clarity, logic, and persuasiveness of grant proposals.
- Consult with investigators in responding to critiques for grant proposal resubmissions.
- Collaborate with the SOM PASS team.
- Provide comprehensive review and editing of grant proposals written by early career investigators (identified by DOS leadership for focused mentoring and career development).
- Maintain documentation detailing DOS research resources and capabilities to support grant applications and develop template language for common proposal elements.
- Assist with the development of processes and procedures to support internal peer review and feedback on initial draft proposals.
- Offer grant writing seminars to DOS investigators.
- Participate in DOS initiatives designed to promote scientific collaboration and enhance DOS investigator research portfolios.

Research Scientist
- A master’s degree in a biomedical sciences field.
- Two years of professional experience in scientific/medical writing or as a journal editor.
- A master’s degree in a biomedical sciences field.
- Six or more years of professional experience in scientific/medical writing or as a journal editor.
- A doctorate degree in a biomedical sciences field.
- Experience in a biomedical research institution.
- Experience working as an independent consultant or medical writer.
- Experience as a professional editor at a scientific journal.
- Advanced data visualization skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective, collaborative relationships with faculty and staff at all levels throughout the DOS and the institution.
- Exemplary oral and written communication skills with the ability to articulate clear, persuasive, and concise thoughts in a well-organized structure.
- Extensive knowledge of scientific writing, editing, and grammar.
- Ability to develop clear project descriptions and scientific rationales that are written to be responsive to sponsors’ funding criteria.
- Excellent critical analysis skills.
- Flexible self-management skills enabling one to plan, develop, and complete multiple projects and complex tasks within committed timelines and established deadlines.
- Exceptionally detail-oriented and capable of noting and correcting discrepancies in statements and data across multiple components of a grant proposal.
- High-level proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), EndNote, and BioRender.
