The Technical Director position is a staff 12 month, full-time position in the College of Arts and Sciences that will direct all technical operations and maintenance of the Experimental Theatre and Concert Hall in the new Roger Glass Center for the Arts and for Sears Recital Hall in Humanities and Black Box Theatre in Fitz Hall. The Technical Director will support the academic production seasons of the Music Department and associated programs in addition to all other internal and external events and performances requiring support. The Technical Director, with assistance from the Staff Technician and student workers, will support all technical operations for all rehearsals, productions, performances and events including rentals, external users and summer programming. As a member of the event support staff team, which will also include the Technical Director and Event Managing Director, the Staff Technician will attend and support all production meetings, tech/dress rehearsals, events, and performances.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Fine or Performing Arts or related field
Minimum of 5 years experience as a technical director or assistant technical director for a reputable professional company or academic theatre program
Working knowledge of techniques, methods and procedures of theatre, dance, or music productions
Experience teaching performance technology at any level
Experience with stage management
Experience in sound and lighting design and implementation
Experience working in a scene shop in an academic or professional setting
Experience supervising students
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills
Articulated ability to support the University of Dayton’s commitment inclusive excellence
Ability to work flexible hours on-campus for scheduled evening and weekend load ins/outs, rehearsals, and performances
Ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism and flexibility in a team environment
Ability to handle multiple projects, set priorities and meet deadlines while maintaining a high level of performance
Articulated commitment to preserving quality of work while staying on budget
Ability to create a positive learning atmosphere for students
Valid driver's license with low risk driving record
Preferred Qualifications
While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:
Masters in Fine Arts in a program, which included technical training for performances, from an accredited program
Evidence of engagement in activity designed to remove barriers and to increase participation by groups historically underrepresented in this field
Proficiency with standard shop equipment and strong carpentry, painting, and theatrical effects skills
Ability to create and interpret technical drawings needed for scenic elements
Experience with Vectorworks or AutoCAD
Experience with theatrical rigging techniques and electrics hang;
Experience supervising staff
