The Help Center is the main service desk in the Morris Library and serves UD students, staff, faculty and alumni, as well as those from the community. As a member of the Help Center staff, the incumbent will provide informational and directional assistance with print and electronic resources, media, equipment, and spaces. Staff also circulate materials in the collection and provides referrals to other Library staff for more advanced research assistance.
Reporting to the Help Center Coordinator, the incumbent will be the primary point person for the Library Annex, a high-density storage facility 1 mile from Morris Library, which holds books, Special Collections, Government Documents and microforms. Scholars from the University of Delaware (UD) and partner institutions rely on timely response and accurate management of these holdings.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Fulfill requests for items stored at the Library Annex. Retrieve items by operating the stock picker vehicle and deliver items physically to Morris Library. Locate and scan requested Annex materials for electronic delivery to Collections Sharing and Delivery unit. Lift and move heavy boxes of materials from various locations. Monitor stock picker for maintenance needs and maintain order picker certification.
- Collaborate with other departments to coordinate transfer of materials from Morris Library to the Library Annex. Process materials for Library Annex. Verify bibliographic data and updates holdings and item-level information in Library records according to standards; maintain accurate Annex shelf assignment data.
- Serve as trained and knowledgeable backup and partner for Help Center staff responsible for daily operations and special projects related to the Morris Library main stacks. Assist with special projects including stacks space studies; use studies of Library materials; collection shifts of library materials; as well as transfer of materials to the Library Annex.
- Provide services at the Help Center desk. Duties include : checking library materials in and out; providing information services using electronic resources, including demonstrating basic search techniques in the online Library catalog; interpreting policies and procedures for library users; assisting users with print release stations, printers, and scanners; assisting instructors and students with using course reserve services.
- Provide functional supervision for student assistants at the Help Center. Ensure there are no gaps in desk coverage due to unplanned absences; assign duties; and provide training. Contribute to the performance appraisal process for student assistants.
- Plan space utilization and future needs of materials in the Annex. Report facilities-related concerns as the sole staffer of this facility.
- Perform periodic departmental tasks such as : process “missing” items; search and retrieve items requested by users; process course reserves; coordinate materials transfer between the main library and the branch libraries; assist with preparing, generating, and analyzing reports related to Help Center analytics and statistics.
- Other duties and projects as assigned.

Work Hours : Sunday - Thursday, 2 : 30 pm – 11 : 00 pm is the standard work week during Fall / Spring Semesters. Hours vary for winter and summer sessions and semester breaks.
