Pre-Press Technician

PAY GRADE: 26N

CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

Under limited supervision, independently performs typesetting, layout, and design of a wide variety of internal University publications. The principal emphasis is producing finished artwork and visual materials for reproduction purposes in the print media using graphic software and equipment. Requires independent judgment in providing consultation services, technical support, and training staff in the use of software.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Creates and composes publications for the University community; performs design, layout and typesetting to produce finished product.
• Provides design assistance and advice in the translation of verbal ideas into visual materials for a wide variety of publications.
• Meets the client’s or department’s communication objectives through a thorough knowledge of type and design to develop concepts, sketches, comprehensives, or print-ready art and advises clients of appropriate options to achieve their communication objectives.
• Operates within deadlines established for various publications by following an established production schedule, preparing details for print vendors when needed, and archiving the work electronically on the Printing Services server.
• Provides technical support services to the University community in desktop publishing.
• Assists with printing of wide format and signage materials.
• Proofreads and edits copy.
• Maintains electronic filing systems.
• Cleans and maintains equipment including photographic processing device.
• Maintains inventory and orders supplies.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Minimum of a B.A/B.F. A or GED with four years of experience in graphic design including composition equipment, computerized typesetting and desktop publishing systems. Additional related education may be substituted for required experience.
• Ability to work independently, follow written and oral instructions.
• The ability to work with various graphic design and layout software applications commonly used on Mac’s and PC’s is required. Proficiency in all Adobe Creative Suite software packages and Microsoft Word on a Mac Computer is required. A thorough understanding of digital file formats (pdf, tiff, eps) from different operating systems (Mac and PC) is required
• Color management skills and the ability to work with different digital file formats are required. The ability to output digital files to various output devices like RIP on CTP system and to the front end of digital presses is required.
• The ability to continue to learn and use new graphics software on an ongoing basis is required.
• Visual acuity and the ability to visually distinguish color to do layout and design work for printing is required.
• Interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Requires the ability to lift, with or without assistance, up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods of time.
• Requires the ability to accurately discern job specs and troubleshoot related problems.
• Occasionally required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials.
