Position Summary
The Director of Health & Wellness Services at the School of Dentistry is responsible for all health and wellness related programs, services, and broad-based interventions to support the dental student population. This role provides individual psychotherapy for all students enrolled in graduate, DDS, and dental hygiene programs (roughly 700 students). This position provides consultative support for integral student and academic services such as, the Faculty-Student Mentoring Program, Clinic Lead support, development of administrative policies and protocols, and behavioral health curricular components. This role is responsible for development of contemporary, evidence-based approaches to mental health services and a humanistic learning environment within the institution.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide daily individual ongoing psychotherapy treatment for School of Dentistry students (approximately 700). Maintain and offer mental health referral sources when the need arises. Identify and form partnerships with content experts for intervention, education and awareness for individual student needs.
- Develop and implement evidence-based student policies, programs, and services to address co-curricular needs in alignment with the educational mission.
- Manage crisis intervention and response in collaboration with faculty, staff, and Assistant Deans for Student Services, Clinic Administration, Academic Administration, and the Dean.
- Evaluate the learning environment for the presence of supportive structures and systems, identify gaps in DDS, DH and graduate dental programs, and implement solutions to mitigate risk for psychological distress in alignment with national trends and needs in post-secondary education.
- Design, implement, and present psycho-educational programming on a broad range of psychological issues for faculty, staff and students in compliance with accreditation standards. Develop appropriate printed and web-based mental health resource materials for students and faculty.
- Serve as a liaison between Disability Support Services, Academic & Clinic Administration, Student Services, and the School of Dentistry faculty and administration to coordinate accommodations for students in need. Collaborate with Wellness Center for School of Dentistry students on case-by-case basis.
- Support the Assistant Dean for Student Services & Enrollment Management in annual assessment and evaluation of student satisfaction data.
- Support and promote the mission of the School of Dentistry and University of Detroit Mercy. Implement School of Dentistry and University policies and procedures; participate in School of Dentistry and University functions with students, faculty, and alumni as appropriate based upon role.
- Attend professional development conferences for CEU credits according to licensing requirements.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
Education – A college degree and a professional certificate or graduate degree.
Experience – Five years to seven years (Equivalent combination of education and employment).
Preferred Qualifications
Education: Master’s degree (M.A.) in Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, or related clinical area; five or more years of related experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Flexible in meeting the needs of a graduate health professions students in terms of availability, schedule modifications, modality of therapeutic intervention, and referrals on an ongoing basis.
- Demonstrated ability to navigate complex issues involving mental health triage and response within the context of a higher education environment.
- Previous experience working with college students and an awareness of developmental perspective is preferred. Willingness to engage and interact in a dynamic and inclusive educational environment with a social justice and equity-minded approach.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills including experience and ability to give group presentations.
- Demonstrated excellence in organizational skill set, including attention to detail and thorough record-keeping ability. High degree of autonomy and self-direction in workplace.
Physical Requirements
Job may require lifting light weight objects (1 to 10 pounds) with no repetitive bending or stooping. Occasionally lift average weight objects (1 to 10 pounds).
Work Environment
Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office.
Licenses/Certifications
Must currently possess full licensure in the State of Michigan (Personal Counseling or MSW).

Additional Information
This is a full-time position with all job responsibilities occurring at the School of Dentistry. This position includes routine collaboration with the Student Health & Wellness Center at the University of Detroit Mercy on university-wide initiatives and case-by-case consultations, as needed.
