Other Conditions : This is a temporary appoint as the full time Director. This appointment is annually renewable up to three-years with the possibility for continuation.
The General Education Office (GEO) is headed by a faculty director who is a tenured member of the Manoa Faculty. The Director of the GEO is appointed by the Vice Provost for Academic Excellence (VPAE) in consultation with the Manoa Faculty Senate's Senate Executive Committee (SEC). Although the GEO is organizationally under the OVPAE, which provides budget and administrative resources, by Regent Policy (RP 1.210), curricular responsibility for General Education rests with the faculty through its governance body, the Manoa Faculty Senate. As such, it is imperative that the GEO Director work collaboratively with the Manoa Faculty Senate on implementing and assessing the General Education program and providing faculty development opportunities that strengthen the delivery of General Education at Manoa.
The OVPAE and SEC seek to fill the position of Director of the General Education Office with an expected start date of August 1, 2025. Qualified candidates will be tenured members of the UHM faculty. The position is an 11-month faculty position.

Duties and Responsibilities
Specific duties of the Director of the GEO in working with the General Education Committee (GEC) as an Ex-Officio member include :
- Facilitate and promote faculty shared governance over General Education curriculum by supporting the GEC as needed with background knowledge and connections to other faculty groups, campuses and administration, so that the GEC may make informed decisions;
- Attend Focus Board meetings as needed and all GEC meetings;
- Assist the GEC in the implementation of General Education policy in collaboration with UH Manoa colleges, departments, and offices;
- Review, assess, and make suggestions for improvements regarding governance and workflow of the current boards attached to GEC;
- Propose procedures for implementing General Education curricular policies for review by the GEC and its associated boards;
- Propose and oversee General Education assessment activities in collaboration with the GEO Assessment Coordinator, the GEC, and the Gen Ed Boards, and in consultation with the Manoa Assessment Committee and the Assessment and Curriculum Support Center;
- Coordinate academic program reviews for the General Education program in collaboration with the GEC, the GEO, and the OVPAE;
- Ensure the General Education curriculum adheres to the requirements of external organizations such as our accrediting body WSCUC, the WASC Senior College and University Commission;
- Work to ensure the General Education program is consistent with efforts to improve graduation rates while maintaining high quality instruction;
- Communicate and work collaboratively with the Office of Admissions, Office of the Registrar, Council of Academic Advisors, academic departments, faculty members teaching General Education courses, and other UH Manoa groups / units as appropriate;
- Communicate and work collaboratively with all Manoa Faculty Senate committees including GEC, Committee on Academic Planning and Policy (CAPP), Committee on Administration and Budget (CAB), and SEC, and other committees as needed; the Council of Academic Advisors (CAA); faculty-at-large; and administrators within UH as well as with partner institutions on articulation policy and implementation related to General Education;
- Routinely update the SEC and OVPAE on General Education procedures, activities, data, and needs, and remain in communication with CAPP on policy matters as they impact implementation.
The Director oversees the GEO and its staff and is responsible for formulating budget requests and managing the GEO budget and ensuring the GEO fulfills its primary functions. The responsibilities of the GEO Director include oversight of the following functions :
