DescriptionTitle : Assistant ProfessorHiring Unit : Kamakakuokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies, Hawaiinuiakea School of Hawaiian KnowledgeLocation : UH ManoaDate Posted : January 3, 2025Closing Date : Continuous - application review begins January 30, 2025.Salary Information : Salary Commensurate with qualifications and experienceMonthly Type : 9 MonthTenure Track : TenureFull Time / Part Time : Full TimeTemporary / Permanent : PermanentFunding : General FundsOther conditions : Recruiting for one tenure track Assistant Professor faculty position to start on August 1, 2025Duties and ResponsibilitiesTeach assigned undergraduate and graduate courses at KCHS in Kukulu Aupuni, and at least one of the other areas–Halau o Laka, Kumu Kahiki, Moolelo Oiwi, and Malama Aina, which could include introductory, lower-division, core, or other required courses.Develop and teach new undergraduate and graduate courses in Kukulu Aupuni, and at least one of the other areas–Halau o Laka, Kumu Kahiki, Moolelo Oiwi, Malama Aina.Actively participate in undergraduate and graduate advising, mentoring, committees, research, student activities, and off-campus learning.Conduct and maintain an active research agenda in their field of expertise.Provide service to the department, college, university, profession, and the broader community.Perform other duties as assigned.Minimum QualificationsPhD or JD, from a college or university of recognized standing in a field of study closely related to, or focusing on, Hawaiian Ancestral Knowledge, including but not limited to Anthropology, Archaeology, Architecture, Economics, Education, English, Ethnobiology, Ethnobotany, Geography, Health, History, Indigenous / Native Studies, Political Science, Law, Natural Resource Management, Planning, Public Health, and / or other areas may be considered based on candidates' strengths. ABDs may be considered.Demonstrated ability to teach and develop undergraduate and graduate coursework related to Kukulu Aupuni and other areas.Demonstrated ability to conduct and publish research and / or creative scholarship related to Kukulu Aupuni and other KCHS areas of concentration.Demonstrated ability to utilize educational technology in teaching (in person, online, synchronous, and asynchronous formats).Considerable knowledge of ancestral and historical topics in Hawaii and the broader Moananuiakea.Experience in working with, and advocating for, the Native Hawaiian community on issues of history, land, culture, language, and politics.Proficiency in Hawaiian and English, including the ability to do research and create new knowledge in Hawaiian.Poise and good address for meeting and conferring with others.Desirable QualificationsDemonstrated competence and experience teaching in higher education.Experience teaching courses in higher education in Hawaiian Studies or related fields.Demonstrated history of research and scholarly achievement in Hawaiian Ancestral Knowledge in the topics related to the field of Kukulu Aupuni.Experience teaching and developing new courses in the field of Hawaiian Studies.Ability to teach courses in Hawaiian.Experience utilizing educational technology in teaching (in person, online, synchronous, and asynchronous formats).Diverse and extensive experience in working with, and advocating for, the Native Hawaiian community on issues of history, land, culture, language, and politics.Demonstrated ability to attract significant extramural funding and secure grants and contracts to build program base.To Apply : Click on the "Apply" button on the top right corner of the screen to complete an application and attach the required documents.
