INTRODUCTION
Reporting to the Vice President for Research and Innovation (VPRI), the Associate Vice President provides leadership and initiative for system-wide research and innovation programs and initiatives, and workforce and economic development. The position serves as the deputy to the Vice President and has full authority to make decisions and commitments on matters relating to research, workforce, and economic development activities at the University of Hawai‘i.
This is an executive position with responsibility for assisting the VPRI in ensuring the advancement of the University’s missions and research goals. This position works in close coordination with all seven community colleges, three (3) baccalaureate campuses, as well as with system-wide offices that support the University’s research, workforce and economic development mission.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead and direct research initiatives and program development with duties and responsibilities that include but are not limited to :
- Assist in ensuring that the University’s research missions, goals, and activities are aligned with and supportive of the UH strategic directions goals, metrics and efficiencies.
- Establish an office to oversee specific research and innovation initiatives at the UH System including but not limited to :
- STEM education initiatives
- Academy for Creative Media (ACM) initiatives
- SBIR / STTR (Small Business Innovation Research / Small Business Technology Transfer) program collaborations
- EPSCoR / IDeA (Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research / Institutional Development Award) programs
Provide advice and assistance in development of initiatives that support faculty and student research and creativity leading to innovative solutions to local and global problems and challenges.
Assist in establishing and provide direction to an Office of Strategic Research Philanthropy. Work in close coordination with the University of Hawai‘i Foundation (UHF) on research philanthropic endeavors.
Advise and oversee the development of short and long-range programs, plans, and objectives for partnerships in research, workforce and economic development, including efforts to increase community and private industry support, technology transfer, and commercialization of research.
Pursue special projects, as assigned, that focus on the University’s research and resource development efforts.
Provide leadership support and guidance for development, implementation, and communication of research policies and procedures and program development with duties and responsibilities that include but are not limited to :
Oversee / manage development, implementation, and communication of UH System research policies and procedures.
Maintain working relationship between UH and RCUH, and have oversight over research revolving funds, service orders, and internal MOUs.
Oversee indirect cost recovery negotiations and work closely with the Office for Research Services (ORS). Assist in developing and recommending budget allocations and reallocations for research return of overhead funds, assuring that budgets are linked to strategic plans.
Assume the administrative and management responsibilities of the VPRI in his / her absence.
Other duties as assigned.
