The University of Hawai’i Department of OB/GYN & Women’s Health is seeking a scholarly individual with a strong and documented commitment to research and teaching that will be a role model and mentor for our learners and colleagues. Faculty in this classification are expected to provide a minimum of 20% effort towards teaching, research, and service, respectively. Actual effort may vary based on the position’s and department’s operational needs.
Assistant Professor Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performing Scholarly Activities
- Original research efforts.
- Grant funding, presentations and publications as required result of these research efforts.
- Identify and encourage collaboration between faculty and learners
- Interact with health systems research institute and YIRB to advance the research mission of the department
- Resident and Fellowship research program
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state and local laws and guidelines.
- Ensure our learners performing research have the training and infrastructure they need to be effective.
- Conduct short courses to Residents and Fellows that describe the basic features of managing clinical research.
- The faculty in this position will be required to work with residents and fellows individually on their projects to ensure the research meets academic standards.
- Teaching
- Contributing to medical student teaching in didactic and PBL classes
- Contributing to undergraduate teaching in classes offered by JABSOM based departments, as appropriate
- Contributing to JABSOM graduate program classes, as appropriate
- Mentoring graduate students in both MS and PhD programs, as appropriate
- Administration
- Working along Associate Chair for Research and Innovations and Research Division Chief to monitor grant funding and promote grant submission efforts, particularly in translational research areas.
- Performing other activities including services to the School, Campus, and the University, or profession.
Associate Professor Duties and Responsibilities:
- In addition to the duties and responsibilities for the Assistant Professor rank, assume a role of professional leadership in translational research.
- Direct or administer programs in research with national collaboration

- Direct or administer programs in research with national or international collaboration
- Mentoring junior or mid-level faculty regarding research, particularly in area of grant funding
Assistant Professor Minimum Qualifications:
- MD or PhD from an accredited college or university of recognized standing.
- Demonstrated proficiency in demographics, basic and/or clinical research or Epidemiology.
- Demonstrated research focus in the area of women’s health.
- Demonstrated experience in the research design and methods.
- Ability to serve as a mentor for undergraduate and graduate students, post-doc fellows, and junior colleagues.
- Poise and good address for meeting and conferring with others.
Associate Professor Minimum Qualifications:
- MD, PhD, or MD from an accredited college or university of recognized standing.
- Demonstrated proficiency in demographics, basic and/or clinical research or Epidemiology.
- Evidence of proficiency in teaching; minimum of four (4) years at the rank of Assistant Professor or one (1) year in the rank of Associate Professor at another medical school of recognized standing.
- Demonstrated grantsmanship as evidenced by prior independent National Institutes of Health (NIH) or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) or other federal/state or private funding.
- Established research focus in the area of women’s health.
- Demonstrated proficiency in the research design and methods.
- Ability to serve as a mentor for undergraduate and graduate students, post-doc fellows, and junior colleagues.
- Poise and good address for meeting and conferring with others.
Full Professor Minimum Qualifications:
- In addition to the minimum qualifications for Associate Professor:
- Four (4) years in the rank of Associate Professor, or ten (10) years of other medical experience, or a total of ten (10) years of teaching in the rank of Associate Professor and other research experience, or one (1) year in the rank of Professor at another medical school of recognized standing.
- Evidence (as determined by invitation for published reviews, citations of publications, and from reference letters or equivalent) of having made a major contribution to the clinical specialty.
- Demonstrated capacity for leadership in the clinical department and medical profession.
- Recognition among peers at the local, regional, and/or national levels, as determined by invitations to present at local, regional and/or national meetings, and by refer or equivalent.
- Evidence of research/scholarship productivity.
- Demonstrated excellent communication skills.
