Duties and Responsibilities
- Serve as back-up to Hawaii Pacific Health (HPH) Internal Medicine (IM) Site Director for University of Hawaii Primary Care (UHPC)-related activities – especially Continuity Clinic.
- Responsible for teaching and supervising medical students and residents, including but not limited to, inpatient and outpatient clinical teaching at HPH affiliated sites; and didactic teaching.
- Attends faculty development sessions and meetings geared to strengthen their role as a clinician educator, educational leader, and clinical scholar.
- Participates with Primary Care Internal Medicine Residency Program (IMRP) at HPH.
- Works with the UH Program Director, Department Chair, members of the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) Office of the Designated Institutional Official, the HPH Chief Academic Officer/JABSOM Associate Dean for Clinical Programs at HPH and HPH clinical program or service line leaders to ensure the quality of the educational experience for the residents by ensuring that those requirements established by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the Primary Care Internal Medicine Residency Review Committee of the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) are met.
- Assists with planning, implementation, and maintenance of the ACGME-accredited three-year primary care internal medicine residency program, including participation in JABSOM Department of Medicine educational leadership meetings, UHPC leadership meetings, the Program Evaluation Committee and annual program evaluation sessions.
- Provides critical input into the recruitment and retention of quality academic faculty and residents into an inclusive learning and working environment.
- Assists the Program Director in developing criteria, standards, and processes for performance evaluations of residents.
- Participates in the resident evaluation process, including the clinical competency committee.
- Assists in the implementation of fair procedures regarding academic and non-academic discipline, and/or resident complaints or grievances regarding program issues and concerns.
- Works with the Program Director to update the Residency’s curriculum on a continuous basis, focusing on developing, and implementing a primary care educational model that includes interdisciplinary, team-based learning and care of individuals and utilization of population health management tools and resources.
- Coordinates orientation activities for Primary Care IM residents within HPH.
- Assists UH Primary Care Program Director, the core IMRP Residency Program Director, Clerkship Director, and Chair in medical education and career advising for internal medicine residents in primary care Internal Medicine, and advanced medical students. This may include JABSOM IM or Primary Care-focused interest groups or other workshops.
- Assists with recruitment and training of volunteer clinical preceptors within HPH, fostering ongoing relationships with community preceptors, developing & executing the strategic and operational plan of the Residency.
- Helps identify and develop clinical learning environments in ambulatory medicine that meet Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME - medical school accreditation) and ACGME accreditation requirements.
- Develops and implements strategies aligned with JABSOM and the UH Department of Medicine to address the physician shortage; developing, sustaining and improving primary, ambulatory, longitudinal, and transitional care in general internal medicine.
- Collaborates with community stakeholders and faculty within Department, School, and University.
- Performs research and/or comparable scholarly activity including educational research or quality improvement, patient safety, or health disparities in primary care-focused projects.
- Other duties as assigned.
Assistant Professor
- MD degree or equivalent medical degree from an accredited medical school.
- Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and/or American Board of Medical Specialists in Internal Medicine.
- Current Hawaii medical license by date of hire.
- Demonstrated ability in teaching and patient care.
- Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
- Excellent organizational skills.
Associate Professor
Same as Assistant Plus
- Four years in the rank of Assistant Professor, or four years of other medical experience, or a total of four years of teaching in the rank of Assistant Professor and other experience, or one year at the rank of Associate Professor at another medical school or recognized standing.
- Proven ability to teach medical students, residents, or fellows.
- Evidence of excellent patient care in a collaborative environment.
- Evidence of effective research and scholarly activity (i.e., recent publications in peer-reviewed journals or regional/national presentations), or medical education administration.
- Experience in academic and/or clinical program administration.
- Recognition for having made a significant scholarly contribution to the clinical specialty.
- Ability to serve as a role model for students and junior colleagues.
- Experience functioning in a complex system of multiple organizations and stakeholders.
- Familiarity with LCME and ACGME requirements.
Desirable Qualifications
- Working knowledge of health care reform.
- Working knowledge and management experience in population health, chronic care models, team-based care, payment transformation, health care quality, patient safety, and/or risk management.
- Familiarity with LCME and ACGME requirements related to internal medicine educational experiences.
- Eligibility for clinical privileges at Hawaii Pacific Health.
