Duties and Responsibilities- Provide leadership in the development and implementation of a community horticultural program to promote environmentally sound home gardening, landscaping, pest management, and the wise use of natural resources by urban clientele and master gardener volunteers in Maui County (islands of Maui, Molokai, and Lanai). Recruit, lead and manage Master Gardener volunteers and coordinate the Master Gardner training program, activities and events in Maui County. This includes seeking extramural funding and producing scholarly work that contributes to the field.
- Works with the Statewide Master Gardener faculty team to implement consistent statewide training.
- Develop and deliver an integrated program, prepare educational materials, conduct field days, workshops and conferences, respond to inquiries from the public and serve as a resource for instructional programs in the area of urban horticulture.
- Develop multi-disciplinary, collaborative partnerships with faculty, government/community agencies, Master Gardeners, industry, community groups and the general public.
- Develop education and demonstration activities in the “Cooperative Extension- Kahului Education and Demonstration Garden” in collaboration with the Maui Agricultural Research Center (MARC) technicians, CTAHR faculty, and community collaborators/volunteers.
- Promote and market Extension programs.
- Obtain grants and pursue other funding opportunities to provide program sustainability.
- Contribute to scholarly and Extension activities on the county, state, and national levels.
- Participate in Department, College and University service/governance.
- Must be willing to travel by air as needed to the islands of Lanai, Moloka’i, and others as needed.
- Work with stakeholders involves some meetings that occur after normal working hours and/or on weekends at off-site locations. Coordinate with and advise the volunteer Master Gardener Advisory Board.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Master’s degree from a college or university of recognized standing, with major work in horticulture, plant science or a related field, whichever is appropriate.
- At least 3 years of successful experience in Cooperative Extension work or equivalent in closely related field.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and to assume responsibility for developing an Extension program.
- Ability to work harmoniously with other agents in an integrated Extension system, and with related agencies.
- Ability to travel independently to various geographical locations in a timely manner. Requirement may be fulfilled by a valid Hawai‘i Driver’s License (class 3), comparable driver’s license, or other means of transportation which meets position needs.
- Strong track record of scholarly publications and successful acquisition of extramural funding.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively through oral, written and visual channels, using traditional educational tools.
- Training or practical experience in community horticulture, home gardening, Master Gardener program, and volunteer recruitment and management.
- Coursework or experience in education/adult education or project management.
- Demonstrated ability to obtain external funding or other in-kind program resources.
- Experience with developing educational materials for websites and using social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube for educational purposes.
