The dental hygiene program at the University of Hawaii (UH) at Manoa School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene is the only baccalaureate level program in the state. It offers the educational preparation required of dental hygienists to provide oral health care and education to the people of Hawaii, the continental U.S., and the Pacific-Asia region. Students majoring in dental hygiene can become licensed professionals who offer preventive, education, and therapeutic services for the control of oral diseases and the promotion of optimum oral health. Duties and Responsibilities:- Primary instructional area to be didactic, laboratory and clinical application of dental & dental hygiene sciences.
- Provide oversight and guidance to dental hygiene students, evaluate students' clinic and academic performance, provide advising and assistance to improve students' progression in program, as well as collaborate with the departmental faculty on curriculum implementation.
- Interprets & evaluates intraoral and extraoral dental radiographs.
- Responsible for the organization & management of the Dental Hygiene clinic operations; duties to include the opening & closing responsibilities, inventory control i.e. re-ordering & re-stocking clinic supplies, the maintenance & enforcement of clinic's safety processes in infection control, blood borne pathogen and emergencies plans.
- Actively participates in the departmental, school, campus and external organizational committees to promote the program on the campus and in the community.
- Assists with the planning, coordination of the Continuing Education (CE) offerings for the oral health professionals and students.
- Attends departmental faculty meetings, student recognition ceremonies.
- Participates in curriculum development and evaluation, including renewal of course designations for assigned courses.
- Maintains CE credits in teaching methodologies for the courses assigned.
- Other duties as needed.
- Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree from a Commission on Dental Accreditation institution;
- Minimum of 20 hours per week of General Dentistry clinical experience for the last 5 years (2016-present);
- Current State of Hawaii Dental (dentist) licensure to practice;
- Demonstrated active involvement in community service and organizations or professional associations;
- Able to work flexible hours (Monday - Saturday, starting as early as 6:00 a.m. and working late as 7:00 p.m. depending on assigned courses); and
- Meet CE requirements for state licensure and Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) standards for faculty teaching in a dental hygiene program.
- Demonstrated ability in teaching and patient care; poise and good address for meeting and conferring with others.
- Specialization in periodontology.
- 1-2 years recent (2020-present) teaching experience in a dental educational setting.
- Familiar with Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) standards for Dental Hygiene education.
