The Library and Information Science (LIS) Program within the School of Communication and Information (SCI), College of Social Sciences, University of Hawai'i at Manoa (Honolulu, Hawaii) invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor (F-3) to join our American Library Association-accredited program. This is a permanent, tenure-track, full-time, 9-month, faculty appointment to begin August 1, 2025, subject to position clearance, availability of funds, and satisfactory performance. 

 

We are seeking a candidate with expertise in areas such as digital archives, digital libraries, digital literacies, Indigenous or regional (e.g. Asia/Pacific) knowledge systems, content management systems, public librarianship and/or information technologies are especially encouraged to apply. We are also seeking a candidate with a commitment to teaching and advising students from diverse and underserved backgrounds.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Support the Library and Information Science (LIS) Program, School of Communication and Information (SCI), and the Interdisciplinary PhD Program in Communication and Information Sciences through research, teaching and service.
  2. Maintain a vigorous research agenda, and meet expectations of tenure and promotion.
  3. Teach core and elective courses supporting multiple areas across the LIS curriculum, using face-to-face, online and hybrid modes.
  4. Serve as academic advisor and mentor to students.
  5. Participate actively in professional and student organizations.
  6. Supervise independent study, thesis and professional development activities.
  7. Actively participate in cross-unit activities within the SCI.
  8. Actively collaborate and coordinate with UH Libraries digital collections and initiatives in teaching, research and service.
  9. Participate in LIS Program planning, administration and assessment, and serve selectively on program, School, College and University committees.
  10. Work effectively with diverse constituencies.
  11. Perform related tasks as assigned by the LIS Program Director and SCI Chair.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. PhD in Library and Information Science or a related field.  
  2. Demonstrated commitment to effective teaching.
  3. Evidence of potential to conduct and publish research. 
  4. Research and/or professional experience with digital archives, digital libraries, digital literacies, Indigenous or regional (e.g. Asia/Pacific) knowledge systems, content management systems, public librarianship and/or information technologies. 
  5. Demonstrated ability to maintain professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.  

                                                       

Desirable Qualifications:

  1. American Library Association-accredited Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or related field, or equivalent.
  2. Demonstrated ability to work effectively across disciplines, communities and/or cultures.
  3. Evidence of ability to teach courses supporting multiple areas across the LIS curriculum.College or university teaching or professional training experience.
  4. Demonstrated success or strong potential in securing external research funding.
