Duties and Responsibilities
- Serve as principal coordinator of music activities and instruction at UH Hilo, actively developing students’ instrumental music performance skills and opportunities, and supporting the department’s efforts to incorporate a Hawaiian foundation and perspective into the program.
- Teach 9 credits of music courses each semester, including: Music in Education, Music History and Theory courses, Intermediate level instrumental music technique courses, Hawaii/Pacific focused music courses, Instrumental ensemble(s), Music Convocation, and upper-division electives in the candidate’s area of expertise as student needs dictate.
- Serve as an academic advisor and mentor to students, including mentoring capstone projects.
- Participate in University and community service, including serving on committees, assisting with events, and performing outreach activities on behalf of the department, networking with high schools and other appropriate venues for engagement and recruitment opportunities.
- Work with music components of UH Hilo productions, including serving as the Musical Director, or the primary director (integrating music, dance, and acting), for the department’s large-scale musicals, as needed.
- Engage in program learning outcome assessments.
- Conduct research and/or pursue professional creative development at a level commensurate with tenure-track ranking
Minimum Qualifications
- Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree (MFA or D.M.E. or Ed.D.) in Music or Musical Theatre from an accredited university; or related terminal degree.
- Demonstrated experience teaching Music at the college level.
- Experience conducting for Musical Theatre productions and/or at the college level, for large and/or small ensembles.
- Commitment to, and demonstrated experience in student recruitment and program building, with evidence of professional work with community organizations such as schools and arts programs.
- Experience working in a diverse, multicultural environment.
Desirable Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience teaching college or secondary level courses listed under Duties.
- Knowledge of Hawaii/Pacific music, music techniques, musical instruments, and history.
- Demonstrated professional level performance skills in instrumental music.
- Experience arranging music for Musical Theatre productions.
- Evidence of cross-discipline work with dance and drama programs.
