The University of Hawai‘i West O‘ahu (UHWO) seeks an exemplary educator to teach and develop special education courses and licensure programs for its established and emerging Bachelor of Education, pre-K-12 programs of study. Priority given to candidates with experience in developing undergraduate special education curricula aligned with the professional standards of the discipline, including but not limited to the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC).
Duties:
- Teach undergraduate courses in special education
- Provide leadership in the development of pre-K-12 special education licensure programs
- Supervise early field experience, practicum, and/or student teaching
- Establish and maintain positive working relationships with area schools
- Conduct scholarly research and creative endeavors, leading to peer-reviewed publications
- Participate in professional education associations in the candidate’s discipline
- Pursue professional development activities to stay current in the field
- Contribute to program assessment
- Provide service to the profession and broader community
- Advise undergraduate teacher candidates
- Participate in faculty governance
Minimum qualifications:
- Earned doctorate in one or more of the Special Education fields from a regionally accredited and recognized institution
- Three (3) or more years of excellent special education teaching experience in pre-K-12 special education classrooms, such as self-contained, resource room, or inclusion environments
- Commitment to standards-based teacher preparation that is informed by current research and practice in special education
- Scholarly publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals, refereed presentations at professional conferences, or demonstrated potential to conduct research and publish scholarly works on topics relevant to the education of students with disabilities
- Successful experience with online and/or other technology-assisted instruction
- Interest in and evidence of quality service to the profession and community at large
- Strong collaboration skills with university colleagues and school districts
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity and the education of culturally and linguistically diverse populations and persons with disabilities
- ABD candidates must earn their doctorate by January 1, 2026.
Desirable qualifications:
- Degree and licensed teaching experience in regular early childhood, elementary, middle-level and/or secondary education
- Commitment to, knowledge of, and/or experience with the mission and purpose of the University of Hawai‘i West O‘ahu to position the university as a leading indigenous-serving higher education institution.
- Successful experience developing innovative, technology-based courses for delivery to non-traditional students.
- Knowledge of Council for Exceptional Children, Hawai?i State, and CAEP National accreditation standards and procedures.
- Knowledge of and experience working in Professional Development Schools.
- Demonstrated teaching excellence in culturally and linguistically diverse settings
- Excellent post-secondary teaching in a regionally accredited teacher education program
- Evidence of a focused scholarly research agenda that informs the candidate’s practice.
