The UH Hilo School of Education has served as a resource to area educators for decades, teaching in a culturally rich and diverse setting and conducts, as well as guides, action research to expand knowledge of teaching and learning, providing high-quality, integrated, inquiry- and place-based undergraduate and graduate programs.
The successful candidate will play a key role in the newly established Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education Studies program at UH Hilo, contributing to curriculum development, program implementation, and student mentorship. This program is designed to prepare future educators with a strong foundation in culturally responsive pedagogy, place-based learning, and community engagement, aligning with the educational needs of Hawaii’s diverse K-5 student population.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Teach undergraduate campus-based and web-based courses in Elementary Education, graduate courses in other education-related areas as needed and assigned
- Advise students
- Supervise teacher candidates in schools
- Engage in curriculum development, program assessment and accreditation
- Engage in scholarly work and publication
- Perform service to the institution and discipline
- Engage in partnerships with schools, education agencies, out-of-school-time (OST) programs, and the Hawaii Department of Education
Minimum Qualifications
- Ph.D. or Ed.D. at the time of appointment
- A minimum of three years of K-5 classroom teaching experience
- Demonstrated ability to teach preservice elementary teacher education courses
- Demonstrated ability to teach preservice elementary courses in mathematics or literacy
- Evidence of the ability to establish a productive research agenda.
Desirable Qualifications
- Evidence of successful experience in working with various K-5 schools in Hawai?i or other schools with diverse populations
- Successful experience with school accreditation, program evaluation or data teams
- Successful experience working with pre-service elementary teachers in mathematics or literacy
- Experience mentoring, coaching or supervising students
- Experience with culturally responsive pedagogy and/or place-based teaching.
