Under minimal supervision and direction of the unit Director and/or Senior Advisors, provide integrated, holistic advising, guidance, consultation, coaching, mentoring, and support to UH Hilo Ka Haka Ula O Keelikolani College of Hawaiian Language (CHL) students, focusing on those in our teacher education pathway.
- Contribute to and support the revitalization of the Hawaiian language and culture as a living, growing, vibrant part of daily life through the development, implementation and maintenance of Mauli Ola P-20.
Participate in short-term and long-term CHL assessment and planning regarding college, campus, and system-based student support services.
Participate in the planning and development of course schedules, course and program modifications, and other academic curriculum related discussions.
Assist in the development and implementation of marketing strategies to inform and attract traditional and non-traditional prospective students to CHL.
Represent CHL at Graduate & Professional School Fairs, Applied Learning & Internship Fairs, and other career-development related tasks.
Represent CHL at admission, advising, orientation and registration efforts for new and returning students, including assisting with prospective student visits to CHL.
Coordinate student services recruitment and retention activities, including travel logistics and itineraries for outreach visits and events, and CHL financial aid opportunities for students.
Track and analyze recruitment efforts and recommend changes to recruitment activities based on data collected.
Monitor student progress to degree, inform students about curricular requirements, academic responsibilities and expectations, academic policies, and procedures and provide appropriate referrals to various campus resources as needed.
Provide individual consultations and group educational workshops and outreach programs for prospective students and current undergraduate graduate/professional students.
Coach/mentor CHL students to help them maximize their success in preparation to transition into the workforce or graduate/professional program.
Coordinate all program student travel and events, including planning and coordination of CHL graduation protocols and ceremonies.
Participate in the development of alumni relations for the CHL, including a system of communication with alumni.
Support CHL efforts - including local, national and international partnerships - for student and teacher training, and dissemination of research and methodologies.
Collect, organize, and maintain data related to CHL student graduates, including program completion rates, career pathways, and continuing education outcomes.
Assist CHL with the preparation of internal and external reports related to student progress, graduate success, program effectiveness, and accreditation requirements.
Assist CHL with related policies, procedures, and operations as necessary.
Other duties as assigned.
Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Hawaiian Studies, behavior, social science or related field and 5 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for academic or career advising or similar student support services in a public university or college; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of academic or career advising or similar student support services in a public university or college as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with providing academic or career advising or similar student support services in a public university or college.
Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing software.
For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
Demonstrated oral and written fluency in the Hawaiian language and successful completion of 4 years of university Hawaiian Language courses.
Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with members of the Hawaiian speaking public, students, staff, faculty, and administrators.
Demonstrated experience providing effective academic or career advising services to ethnically, socioeconomically, and culturally diverse students like that found in the community of students at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
Demonstrated experience in adapting and applying cultural competency skills to respond to the unique learning styles and learning needs of Hawaii’s resident students.
Demonstrated familiarity with Hawaiian language medium education environments.
Demonstrated ability to establish priorities and seek tasks to completion.
Ability to travel to various locations in Hawaii, the US mainland, and internationally.
Possession of a valid driver’s license.
