Duties and Responsibilities

The University of Hawaii Information Technology Services Cyberinfrastructure group and the Hawaii Data Science Institute (HI-DSI) are seeking Graduate Assistants who can learn and perform the following tasks:
Assist the Information Technology Services Cyberinfrastructure team in administering and facilitating adoption and use of the Koa advanced high performance computing (HPC) systems. Position will be responsible for helping to ensure the availability, reliability, and security of the HPC systems, as well as providing user support and training. Position will be involved in the full software development lifecycle, from requirements analysis to deployment and maintenance. Collaborate with researchers and other stakeholders to understand their computational needs and provide technical support and guidance. Work closely with researchers from various disciplines and domains, helping them to use the HPC systems and the research software engineer (RSE) solutions effectively and efficiently. Communicate and coordinate with other cyberinfrastructure teams and partners to ensure alignment and integration of the services and products. Contribute to the design, implementation, and evaluation of cyberinfrastructure projects and initiatives, using appropriate tools and methodologies. Position will participate in the planning, execution, and reporting of cyberinfrastructure projects, applying project management skills and agile practices. Position will also conduct research and evaluation on the impact and outcomes of the cyberinfrastructure projects, using quantitative and qualitative methods. Successful candidate will  learn and stay updated on the latest trends and developments in HPC, RSE, Tapis, and science gateways, and participate in relevant training and outreach activities. Keep abreast of the emerging technologies and best practices in the cyberinfrastructure field, and participate in opportunities to learn new skills and knowledge such as PEARC and Science Gateways conferences to present your research work and products. Share expertise and experience with other cyberinfrastructure professionals and communities through presentations, publications, workshops, webinars, etc.

Minimum Qualifications
1.    Be a classified degree-seeking student in a Masters or PhD program in computer sciences or related field under UHM Graduate Division.
2.    Be in good academic standing and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above.
3.    Maintain 6 credits per semester with the exception of those who have reached 800 (dissertation) or 700F (thesis).
4.    Experience using a Linux system.
5.    Experience installing, configuring, and troubleshooting open source software.
6.    Ability to install and troubleshoot server hardware components.
7.    Ability to develop, test, and document research software.
8.    Ability to conduct research and evaluation on the impact and outcomes of a project, using quantitative and qualitative methods.
9.    Ability to communicate effectively and work as a team.
10.    Ability to understand oral and written documentation capable of proofreading with business communication skills.
11.    Ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing and spreadsheet-desktop software as well as cloud-based systems (e.g., Google documents, sheets and calendars). 

Desirable Qualifications
1.    Ability to collaborate with researchers and other stakeholders to understand their computational needs and provide technical support and guidance.
2.    Experience planning, executing, and reporting of cyberinfrastructure or related projects.
3.    Experience administering a Linux system.
4.    Experience with project management skills.
5.    Experience supporting and managing heterogeneous HPC systems.
6.    Experience with cluster management systems such as xCAT, Rocks, or OpenHPC.
7.    Experience with configuration management software such as Salt and Ansible.
8.    Experience with shell scripting using Bash or other shell languages.
9.    Experience utilizing software build systems such as spack or easybuild.
10.    Experience building open source software from source using make files, configure scripts or other build systems.
11.    Experience with deploying software using OS level virtualization technology such as Docker, Singularity, Apptainer.
12.    Experience troubleshooting MPI applications in C/C , Python and/or Fortran.
13.    Experience with managing and troubleshooting network file systems such as NFS and Lustre.
14.    Experience with utilizing and managing ZFS file systems.
15.     Ability to use APIs or other workflow management frameworks to create and manage workflows, applications, and data across different cloud and HPC resources.
16.    Ability to learn and stay updated on the latest trends and developments in HPC, RSE, Tapis, and science gateways, and participate in relevant training and outreach activities.
17.    Experience in using GPUs to accelerate scientific applications.
