Duties and Responsibilities

  • *Serves as Pacific Business Center Program (PBCP) Business Development Manager in the Office of Innovation and Commercialization.
  • *Develops, manages, and provides technical assistance for business development projects, including information research, market research and analysis, feasibility studies, business plans, financial and operational analysis, strategic plans, and other similar projects.
  • *Travel throughout Hawai`i and the U.S. Affiliated Pacific Islands (USAPI) to obtain new clients. Meets with clients to analyze the situation and perform needs assessments, develops consulting proposals in accordance with PBCP and UH requirements, collects client payments (if applicable); maintains communication with clients throughout projects; oversees and manages project deliverables and quality control.
  • *Maintains orderly, comprehensive, and up-to-date client files for all projects and regularly updates database.
  • *Responsible for distributing and collecting performance evaluations from clients upon project completion.
  • *Prepares reports on completed projects, including client business description, work performed, project results and other relevant project details.
  • *Responsible for writing newsletter stories about PBCP and project work.
  • *Trains PBCP support staff on research methods, business planning, financial modeling, and other 
  • *Works collaboratively with the PBCP Program Director on PBCP's strategic plan and helps evaluate and assess PBCP's direction and potential opportunities. Assures individually and collectively that PBCP's core values are incorporated into all operational functions.
  • *Coordinates meetings with internal and external departments and organizations providing economic development assistance for future collaborations and bi-lateral referrals. Participates in conferences, workshops and other events to disseminate information and publicize PBCP services.
  • *Acts as manager for special projects, such as conferences, fairs, workshops, other events or functions, miscellaneous external projects, and internal projects (i.e. PBCP website, database, newsletters, and public relations).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Professional Work Experience 

  • Possession of a Bachelor's degree in Business, Business Administration or related field and 3 year(s) of professional experience with responsibilities for providing technical assistance in market research, business plans or other business analysis reports; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

  • Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of economic development, business development, business planning, and market, business and operations analysis, and research methods as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with economic development, business creation, business management and operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing and spreadsheet software. 

Supplemental Minimum Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to manage work priorities and projects, and employee relations in collaborative and respectful manner.
  • Possess valid driver's license.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Business, Business Administration or a related field.
  • Experience working with business, economic and community development organizations.
  • Experience in economic/business development in Hawaii.
  • Knowledge of culture and traditions of Hawaii and the US Affiliated Pacific Islands.
  • Knowledge of federal, state and city funding sources.
  • Knowledge of UH and RCUH policies and procedures.
  • Experience writing grant proposals and reports to federal, state and private agencies and organizations and managing grant awards.
  • Experience working in a higher education setting.
