University of Hawai‘i, Kapi‘olani Community College, Languages, Linguistics, & Literature Department is seeking applications for the Hawaiian lecturer position. Salary: Minimum $1,911 per credit hour; subject to lecturer placement.

Other Conditions:  For placement into the lecturer pool beginning Summer/Fall 2025. Subject to availability of funds and actual staffing requirements.


Duties and Responsibilities:     

  1. Teach courses in the assigned subject area through multiple modes of teaching (ie. in-person, online, hybrid) ;

  2. Prepare course syllabus and reports related to teaching and student progress;

  3. Assess student learning in terms of course competencies and program learning outcomes;

  4. Submit self-assessment reports based on student and peer evaluations;

  5. Work under the general supervision of the discipline coordinator/division chairperson;

  6. Integrate teaching efforts with other instructors in the discipline area;

  7. Maintain one office hour per week  for each class taught (20 minutes per credit per week);

  8. Classes may be offered In-person, online, evenings, and/or weekends;

  9. Classes may be offered off-site as when required


Minimum Qualifications:

Functionally native oral and written fluency in Hawaiian, the ability to communicate in English, and one of the following:

  1. Master’s degree in Hawaiian language; OR

  2. Master’s degree in Hawaiian as a Second Language; OR

  3. Master’s degree in the study of the culture or history of the people who speak Hawaiian; OR

  4. Master’s degree in Linguistics, ESL, Education or another language. At least 12 credits of advanced coursework in second language methodology, Hawaiian literature, Hawaiian culture, or any combination thereof; OR

  5. Bachelor’s degree in Hawaiian language AND 3 years related work experience; OR

  6. Bachelor’s degree in Hawaiian language as a Second Language AND 3 years related work experience; OR

  7. Bachelor’s degree in the study of the culture or history of the people who speak Hawaiian AND 3 years related work experience; OR

  8. Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics, ESL, Education or other language. At least 12 credits of advanced coursework in second language methodology, Hawaiian literature, Hawaiian culture, or any combination thereof AND 3 years of related work experience.

Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Evidence of experience integrating speaking, writing, technology and thinking skills in the teaching of the Hawaiian language;

  2. Experience teaching Hawaiian language in-person and online;

  3. Successful teaching at the post-secondary level as substantiated by student and peer assessments;

  4. Evidence of ability to work in a collegial manner with peers, department chairs, and administrators;

  5. Successful use of technology to support all modes of instruction;

  6. Commitment to the mission and values of the community college with its open-door and multicultural populations;

  7. Evidence of commitment to Kapi‘olani Community College's mission of positioning the college as a leading Native Hawaiian/indigenous-serving higher education institution

  8. Ability to initiate, execute, and complete projects, including setting specific objectives and measuring results;

  9. Demonstrated evidence of the ability to develop Hawaiian literature and/or culture courses;

  10. Comprehension or understanding of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) scale.
