University of Hawai‘i, Kapi‘olani Community College, Office of Community and Continuing Education is seeking applications for the Non-Credit Instructor (Casual Hire). Please see the information about the position, the duties and responsibilities, the minimum and desirable qualifications, and the job application attachments below:


Important note: Applicants seeking short-term or part-time work with the University of Hawai'i may apply for Casual Hire positions, which include administrative, professional, and technical (APT) or instructional-type positions.  Because of the temporary nature of these appointments, Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits as provided to regular BOR and Civil Service employees (i.e. paid holidays/leave).  Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees, and up to 1 calendar year for part-time employees.

Salary: Range $50.00 - $65.00 per hour (Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience)

Schedule: Up to 19 hours per week

Continuation is dependent on satisfactory performance, program needs, and renewal of funds.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Under general supervision, teach courses assigned.

  • Develop curriculum and teach non-credit courses.

  • Subjects include but are not limited to the following: basic office skills, brand development (marketing), budgeting and finance, business, business or digital analytics, business plan development, entrepreneur, computer (basic, intermediate, and advanced), culinary, culture and history, IT Fundamentals, Artificial Intelligence (AI) Basics, Cyber-security, project management,  health and wellness, digital advertising, digital media, digital arts fundamentals, graphic arts, English as a Second Language, Community Interpreting, Incumbent Worker Community Interpreting Fundamentals, Court Interpreting, foreign languages, gardening (aquaponics, organic, hydroponics), urban farming, Ikebana, hospitality and tourism, Tour Guide Training, leadership, marketing for small business, social media, soft skills, sustainability, resiliency, renewable energy, and performing arts (taiko, hula, or ukulele)

  • Specialized content specific contract training.

  • Evening, weekend courses, and distance education courses may be assigned.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and to teach for a variety of audiences, including adult learners and veterans.

  • Teaching assignment is as needed and dependent upon course enrollment     


Minimum Qualifications: 
  • Certificate and/or license, associate or bachelor's degree in the appropriate subject area, when applicable; or equivalent combination of education/training and job-related experience

  • Knowledge, skills, ability, and expertise required in the field.

  • Must be able to provide a course proposal, description, syllabus detailing the student outcomes, and suggested budget.

  • Note: Education and work experience requirements will vary depending on the course you are applying for:

    • Basic Office Skills or Business Plan Development

      • Bachelor’s in Management or Business Administration with 3 years of related experience

    • Brand Development (Marketing) or Digital Advertising or Marketing for Small Business or Social Media

      • Master's in Marketing or Business Administration (MBA); OR

      • Bachelor’s in Marketing or Business Administration with 3 years of relevant work experience

    • Business or Budgeting and Finance or Business/Digital Analytics or Project Management or Leadership or Soft Skills

      • Master’s Degree in related field; OR

      • Bachelor’s in Business Administration or Finance with 3 years of relevant work experience

    • Entrepreneurship

      • Master’s (MBA) or Master's Degree with major in Entrepreneurship; OR

      • Bachelor’s (BBA) with 3 years of relevant work experience

      • Significant entrepreneurial experience in the profit or not-for-profit sector

    • Hospitality & Tourism or Tour Guide Training

      • Master's degree in hospitality, travel, or tourism; OR

      • MBA with 2 years of relevant work experience in the hospitality & tourism field of which at least 1 year must include industry work experience; OR

      • Bachelor's degree in hospitality, travel, or tourism with 3 years of relevant work experience in the hospitality & tourism field of which at least 2 years must include industry work experience; OR

      • Bachelor's degree in any field with 5 years of relevant work experience in the hospitality & tourism field of which at least 3 years must include industry work experience; OR

      • Associate's degree in hospitality, travel, or tourism with 5 years of relevant work experience in the hospitality & tourism field of which at least 3 years must include industry work experience; OR

      • 15 college credits with 7 years of relevant work experience in the hospitality & tourism field of which at least 5 years must include industry management or supervisory experience

    • Computer (Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced) or IT Fundamentals

      • Master's in Information & Computer Science; OR

      • Master's in Business with coursework in business computer applications; OR

      • Master's in Education Technology with coursework in computer applications; OR

      • Bachelor's in Information and Computer Science with 3 years of relevant work experience; OR

      • Bachelor's in Business with coursework in business computer applications with 3 years of relevant work experience; OR

      • Bachelor’s in any field with 5 years of experience including training; OR

      • Associate degree in Business with some coursework in business computer applications with 5 years of experience including training; OR

      • 15 college credits in Business with some coursework in business computer applications with 7 years of experience including training; OR

      • Master recognition by Business Community in computer applications with 10 years of experience including training

    • Cyber-Security or Artificial Intelligence (AI)

      • Master's in Information & Computer Sciences, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information & Communication Technology, Information Technology, Information Security and Assurance, Information Systems, System and Network Administration, Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering; OR

      • Bachelor's Degree in Information & Computer Sciences, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information & Communication Technology, Information Technology, Information Security and Assurance, Management Information Systems, System and Network Administration, Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering with 3 years of relevant work experience

    • Digital Media

      • Master's in Fine Arts in Studio Art with the specialization in new media art or a related area of study (i.e. design, animation, digital art, digital media, multi-media, computer graphics, film, etc) with 1 year of related industry experience; OR

      • Any Master's degree with coursework in new media art or a related area of study with 3 years of related industry experience; OR

      • Any Bachelor's degree with coursework in new media art or a related area of study with 5 years of related industry experience; OR

      • Any Associate's degree with coursework in new media art or a related area of study with 7 years of related industry experience

    • Digital or Graphic Arts Fundamentals

      • Associate Degree with 5 years of relevant work experience; OR

      • 15 College Credits with 7 years of relevant work experience including training; OR

      • Master recognition by Graphic Arts Community with 10 years of relevant work experience

    • Culture and History

      • Master’s in History or cultural studies

    • English as a Second Language

      • Functionally native oral and written fluency in English and one of the following:

        • Master's in English (language or literature); OR

        • Master's in English as a Second Language; OR

        • Master's in the study of the culture or history of the people who speak English; OR

        • Master's in Linguistics, ESL, Education or another language with at least 12 credits of advanced coursework in second language methodology, English literature, English culture, or any combination thereof

    • Foreign Languages

      • Functionally native oral and written fluency in native  (L1) or second language (L2), the ability to communicate in English, and one of the following:

        • Master's in native or second language (language or literature); OR

        • Master's in the study of the native culture or history; OR

        • Master's in Linguistics, ESL, Education or another language with at least 18 credits of advanced coursework in the native or second language methodology, literature, language, culture, or any combination thereof

    • Community Interpreting in Health or Incumbent Worker Community Interpreting Fundamental

      • Functionally native oral and written fluency in the native language, the ability to communicate in English, and one of the following:

        • Master’s in native (language or literature); OR

        • Master's in Linguistics, ESL, Education or another language

        • Fluency in a native language of the region where the person grew up (L1) or fluency in a foreign language that was studied (L2)

        • Knowledge of commonly used medical terminologies

    • Court Interpreter

      • Hawaii State Judiciary’s Court Interpreter Certification and any Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of relevant work experience; OR 

      • Hawaii State Judiciary’s Court Interpreter Certification and any Associate degree and 7 years of relevant work experience

      • Fluency in a native language of the region where the person grew up (L1) or fluency in a foreign language that was studied (L2)

    • Gardening (Aquaponics, Organic, Hydroponics) or Urban Farming

      • Master’s degree in Agriculture or Applied Science; OR

      • Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture or Applied Science with 3 years of relevant work experience; OR

      • Associate’s degree in Agriculture or Applied Science with 5 years of relevant work experience

    • Ikebana

      • Master Certificate from respective flower arrangement style

        • i.e. Ikenobo, Ohara, Sogetsu

    • Performing Arts (taiko, hula, or ukulele)

      • Master's degree; OR

      • Bachelor's degree and 3 years of relevant work experience in related field; OR

      • Associate's degree and 5 years of relevant work experience in related field; OR

      • Master recognition by the performing arts community and 10 years of relevant work experience in related fields.

    • Health and Wellness

      • Master's (Health or Health related field) with proper certification; OR

      • Bachelor's (Health or Health related field) with 3 years of relevant work experience AND proper certification; OR

      • Associate Degree (Health or Health related field) and a Baccalaureate degree in any field with 5 years of relevant work experience AND proper certification

    • Renewable Energy

      • Master’s degree in engineering (all degrees), earth science, or environmental science; OR

      • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (all degrees), earth science, or environmental science with 3 years of relevant work experience

    • Sustainability and/or Resiliency

      • Master’s (MBA); OR

      • Bachelor’s (BBA) with 3 years of relevant work experience; OR

      • Certification or master recognition within the sustainability and/or resiliency community and 10 years of relevant work experience in related field


Desirable Qualifications: 

  • Teaching experience at the community college or university level.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with adult and non-traditional learners.

  • Experience teaching online setting.

  • Ability to work with a culturally diverse team of people.

  • Good classroom management skills.
