Duties and Responsibilities
Responsible for the administration of activities for the Rural Health (RH) Program and HOME Project that occur throughout the John A. Burns School of Medicine's (JABSOM) four-year curriculum.
- Administers activities for the Kauai Medical Training Track (KMTT).
- Collaborates with neighbor island physician preceptors, physician coordinators, and health systems to schedule rural student clinical rotations. Anticipates and projects the adequacy or
potential shortages of faculty resources available to maintain the rural health aspect of the longitudinal integrated clerkship program.
- Assists with faculty appointments for new neighbor island preceptors.
- Creates and maintains student neighbor island clinical rotation schedules.
- Serves as a liaison for medical students and provides guidance to medical students with issues related to the RH program and KMTT.
- Coordinates student housing on neighbor islands during clinical rotations and works in tandem with future graduate medical education housing needs.
- Takes the lead in planning, organizing and executing RH special events (e.g. student neighbor island trips, Teen Health Camp, KMTT reception, lunch or dinner information session, etc.) which includes establishing goals and timelines; addressing potential problems that may arise; and ensuring successful execution of an event.
- Attends and assists with RH student activities that occasionally occur during off-hours or weekends. This may include travel to the neighbor islands.
- Assists with the coordination of RH and Houseless Outreach and Medical Education (HOME) activities and communication to the students, preceptors, and other OME faculty and staff.
- Manages the transfer of funds from UH Foundation to the UH financial system and tracking/reviewing grant budgets with Directors (for HOME Project, KMTT, and other rural health grants).
- Coordinates RH/HOME faculty development activities, sessions and programs designed to ensure development of skills related to academic medicine with responsibility for all communication with RH preceptors and physician coordinators.
- Recruits and supervises other staff members for RH/HOME special events to create a collaborative setting for the programs and assigned medical students.
- Collaborates with the course directors in the planning, scheduling, and communication for HOME Students in all units and RH students in the MD4 and MD7 curricular blocks.
- Recommends and implements changes to program policies and standard operating procedures to improve operations.
- Advises the Rural Health and HOME Project directors of the progress of projects assigned, anticipated problems, major policy changes expected affecting the program, and completion of projects assigned.
- Coordinates the travel and housing arrangements for the Neighbor Island Medical Scholars Program (NIMSP).
- Assists with the on-boarding process, including planning and execution, for HOME Project volunteers.
- Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
- Possession of a baccalaureate degree in communication, health/social sciences, business, education, or related field and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for program coordination or student support, or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
- Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of program coordination or student support as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
- Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with program coordination or student support in a business, healthcare, research or academic setting.
- Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
- Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing software, and spreadsheet, database, and presentation software, such as Microsoft Office.
- If applicable, for supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently after initial guidance/instruction without significant oversight from others.
- Considerable working knowledge and experience using distance meeting software (e.g. Zoom, Webex, Microsoft Teams).
- Interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a preference for experience working with faculty and or students.
- Ability to work after normal business hours indicating evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
- Ability to travel independently to various geographical locations.
Desirable Qualifications
- Working knowledge of the JABSOM educational curriculum and the organizational structure of the medical school.
- Familiarity with medical education practices.
