The Manager, Fire Safety manages a comprehensive fire and life safety program for the University and ensures applicable safety codes, policies, and procedures are implemented and enforced. Activities include safety education, interpretation of safety codes, inspections, and incident reports. This position serves as the University's Fire Safety Administrator and Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
Duties:
- Develops, manages, and oversees a comprehensive fire and life safety program. Ensures compliance with fire codes, University policies, and safety procedures.
- Conducts audits of new and existing construction projects. Writes and reviews reports on fire code violations and findings.
- Performs acceptance testing for fire alarms, fire pumps, sprinkler systems, special hazard systems, smoke evacuation systems, and stairwell pressurization systems.
- Plans, reviews, and approves building plans, fire alarm designs, and fire sprinkler system drawings. Conducts inspections and issues certificates of compliance.
- Responds to campus emergencies, active fire alarms, and hazardous material incidents. Provides detailed incident reports and recommends follow-up actions.
- Serves as the Local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) for fire safety activities. Interprets and enforces fire safety codes across campus facilities.
- Provides safety education and training to faculty, staff, and students. Conducts safety drills and promotes awareness programs.
- Performs regular fire safety inspections of campus facilities. Addresses and enforces corrections for code violations.
- Develops and updates fire safety policies, procedures, and response protocols in alignment with regulatory requirements and performs related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Criminal Justice, Homeland Security, or a related field, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum five years of experience in fire protection and fire code enforcement.
- TCFP or NFPA (or equivalent) Inspector II certification - required within 12 months of hire date.
- ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800 certifications - required within 12 months of hire date.
- Motor vehicle background check and hearing exam.
- Working knowledge of federal, state, and local fire codes and standards.
- Knowledge of emergency management concepts and continuity of operations planning.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
- Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgement in comparing and recommending solutions.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse university community.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience performing construction plan review and onsite inspections.
TCFP or NFPA (or equivalent) Plan Examiner certification.
ICS 300 and 400; CPR/First Aid Instructor, EMT or higher.
