Summary

Directs and oversees the daily operations of the University’s Student Health Center (SHC) activities related to the delivery of health care and oversight of health care providers. In addition to a role as a Physician, the Medical Director also holds the responsibility for medical decisions of the Student Health Center.

Job Duties

Works as a member of the Division of Student Life & Dean of students leadership team and supports the division’s vision for Student Health and Health promotion.
Provides oversight for licensed physicians, Nurse Practitioners, and other health care providers.
Manages overall responsibility for medical decisions for the SHC.
Represents the Health Center by serving on University committees that require a physician and acts as a physician liaison with health-related professional Colleges and the local medical community, including outreach and consultation.
Provides direct patient care, including utilizing electronic medical records and medical history, physical examination, diagnosis, and treatment.
Orders and interprets laboratory tests, x-rays, EKGs, etc.
Performs minor surgical procedures such as suturing lacerations.
Provides health education, counseling to patients, and patient referrals to other physicians or hospitals for further treatment and care as needed.
Performs other job-related duties as required.

Job Requirements

Education

Requires singular knowledge of a specialized advanced professional discipline or the highest level of general business knowledge, normally acquired through attainment of a directly job-related terminal degree or equivalent formal training in a recognized field of specialization that is directly related to the type of work being performed.

Experience

Requires a minimum of five (5) to seven (7) years of directly job-related experience.

At least three (3) years of progressive management / administrative experience in a healthcare setting.

Preferred

Experience in a Higher Education health clinic setting.

Certification / Licensing

Medical degree and unrestricted medical license required.

Preferred

Board certification in designated specialty.

Evidence of Collegiate Health professional development through the American College Health Association (ACHA) or similar.

Work Complexity

Requires a broad knowledge of principles and practices within a professional field.

Work is very non-standardized and widely varied, involving many complex and significant variables.

Change in Knowledge

The knowledge and / or technology used in the job changes periodically; occasional study and training are required.

Problem-Solving

Requires in-depth analysis to interpret and evaluate obscure / vague information in the development of new solutions for complex technical and / or managerial problems.

Exercises discretion and independent judgment in comparing and recommending numerous solutions. Problems may be atypical within the unit.

Analytical ability and inductive thinking are required in extensively adapting policies, procedures, and methods to fit unusual or complex situations.

Judgment

Activities and decisions are highly complex. Significant independent action and judgment are required subject to university-wide policies.

Has a very significant level of input regarding hiring / termination decisions, performance management, salary increases and disciplinary actions, and / or budget management.

Appropriately delegates decision responsibilities to those with area expertise.
