The Department of Health Systems and Population Health Sciences in the University of Houston's Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine (TJFFCOM) invites applications for a faculty position at the rank of Clinical Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor with a degree from an accredited allopathic or osteopathic college of medicine. We are recruiting new faculty that have achieved excellence in education and are prepared to contribute to our bold vision (http://www.uh.edu/medicine/).
This faculty will serve as a course director in the Physician, Patients, and Populations (PPP) Course, which spans 60 pre-clerkship weeks with 4 hours of weekly instruction. This course is critical to our mission of preparing physicians to deliver primary care in underserved communities with an emphasis on care that is evidence-based, high-value, and team-based. Topics within this course include physician-patient communication, physical diagnosis, medical interviewing, clinical reasoning and decision-making, professionalism, medical ethics, social determinants and health disparities, population health, health informatics, quality improvement and safety, health systems and policy, inter-professional team-based care, cross-cultural care, behavioral health, and evidence-based medicine. The faculty position will lead activities related to clinical skills, which includes interviewing, physical exam, documentation, and simulation.
Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching (1-page), student evaluations, and names and contact information of three references. Applicants must have a track record of excellence in interactive teaching. Experience in medical education is preferred.
Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Primary Responsibilities: Duties of the position will include, but are not limited to Curriculum Development, Content Delivery, and Scholarship (75%)
o Serve as a course director for PPP and other relevant courses
o Develop and deliver the PPP course by collaborating with faculty at the college of medicine and university as well as the broader Houston community
o Partner with the Center for Clinical Arts, Skills, and Experiential Learning (CCASEL) to develop, deliver, and assess simulation activities
o Develop and deliver clinical skills sessions in PPP, including directing and facilitating small-group learning sessions and other active, applied learning and assessment strategies.
o Develop and oversee formative and summative assessment of student performance.
o Assign and submit final grades
o Identify, coordinate, and evaluate opportunities for student scholarship and service learning opportunities
o Conduct ongoing and annual evaluation to assess effectiveness and areas for improvement.
o Share evaluation outcomes through internal reports, conference presentations and publications
o Identify, orient, develop, and provide feedback to faculty in the course
o Provide constructive feedback to mentees, staff, and students
o Contribute to relevant TJFFCOM committees
o Foster collaborative and supportive relationships with colleagues and students
o Maintain accurate electronic medical records
o Participate in interdisciplinary team-based care

Minimum Qualifications:
- Medical degree from an accredited allopathic or osteopathic college of medicine
- Board certification
- Medical Licensure in the State of Texas, by the start date
- Experience with an electronic health record
- Commitment to innovative approaches to education and learning
- Ability to succinctly and effectively convey complex ideas through oral and written communication
Preferred Qualifications:
- Board certification in a primary care specialty
- Experience teaching topics included within PPP and administrative responsibilities within an academic environment
- Experience teaching medical students
- Experience building partnerships across disciplines in pursuit of educational or research objectives
- Experience with cross-disciplinary teaching in an integrated medical curriculum
- Experience with curriculum development and evaluation
- Experience with survey design and data analysis
- Experience using different teaching methods which might include case-based learning, ‘flipped classrooms’, problem-based learning, interactive large group presentations, and audience response systems
- Five years’ experience providing clinical care
