The Western Rural Development Center (WRDC) is one of four rural development centers established by Congress’s Rural Development Act of 1972. It is a collaborative effort between the United States Department and the University of Idaho. The core of its funding comes from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture. The WRDC works with public universities in the Western region to conduct research-based studies and educational outreach programs. It also partners with local communities, decision-makers, entrepreneurs, families, farmers, and ranchers to address rural development issues. The center’s objective is to enhance the region’s land-grant universities and Extension services to help rural communities thrive and become self-sustaining.
Position Overview
We seek three (3) post-doctoral researchers to engage in research activities and analysis, implement, evaluate, and recommend adjustments to research procedures, particularly focusing on rural development issues. They will be responsible for synthesizing and independently preparing results for publication. This role operates under general supervision while allowing for a significant degree of creativity and autonomy. Collaboration with project team members and PIs is required, as well as the coordination and attendance of project meetings are required. Additionally, the position may involve overseeing research operations and the daily activities of junior research personnel.

Duties May Include
- Participating in planning and designing scientific studies or applications
- Planning and conducting research and analysis of scientific data
- Preparing graphic and narrative reports
- Interpreting test results and comparing them with determined standards and limits
- Performing site inspections and field oversight if field work is required
- Planning, designing, developing, monitoring, and evaluating a distinct portion of a scientific project, study, or application
- Researching, designing, implementing, standardizing, and evaluating new procedures
- Maintaining detailed records of results and preparing written reports acceptable to the Principal Investigator and funding agencies
- Other duties as assigned
Required Experience
- Two years of research experience beyond receipt of a Master’s Degree related to the domain of this position
- Ph.D. in Applied Economics or closely related disciplines
- Some evenings, weekends, and minor travel may be required
- Demonstrating organizational and time management skills
- Demonstrating ability to conduct research and publish it in appropriate refereed academic journals of the highest possible quality
- Experience developing and delivering scientific presentations
- A record of research productivity and excellence
- Experience working in interdisciplinary research projects and team settings
- Excellent training in qualitative methods, econometrics, and applied microeconomic theory
- Familiarity with econometric software, being STATA strongly preferred
- Excellence in writing and communication skills
