Position SummaryThe mission for the University of Illinois College of Medicine (UI COM) is to advance health for everyone through outstanding education, research, clinical care, and social responsibility. This position is an extension of the College's mission and provides a holistic approach to student development and support for populations that are underrepresented in medicine (racial / ethnic populations underrepresented in medicine relative to their numbers in the general population and first-generation college graduates) and in turn, helps to advance health equity and increase diversity in the physician workforce. The selected candidate will work to develop and administer programs that support the mission of the College and it's Urban Health Program (UHP), which was established in 1978 when the Illinois State Legislature called for its formation in response to community outcries that significant health care disparities plagued the state's poor, urban, and mostly minority communities. The selected candidate will collaborate with UHP staff at each UI COM campus and with Rockford's Office of Student Affairs (OSA) team. The candidate will provide support and resources based on student learning styles, testing tools, and other medical educational needs. Additionally, the selected candidate will work collaboratively with Rockford's Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion on various projects related to inclusiveness, belonging, and community engagement.

Duties & Responsibilities

Schedule one-on-one meetings with UI COM UHP students to discuss academic progress and performance.Provide support through academic intervention and remediation, learning programs, academic survival workshops, retreats, and counseling. The candidate will provide support and resources based on student learning styles, testing tools, and other medical educational needs.Provide support to incoming Rockford-bound medical student participating in the UI COM UHP Summer Pre-matriculation Program (SPP).Provide education-based initiatives that facilitate awareness of cultural competency and health equity issues.Develop and deliver academic workshops for medical students on topics such as academic success strategies, career development, community engagement, research, and scholarship opportunities.Provide academic intervention for medical students in remediation.Organize programs for medical career exposure opportunities.Supervise the Peer Education Team and provide Peer Education Support Services to medical students.Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in education, psychology, counseling, student affairs, nursing, or related field.Minimum of 2 years of experience in higher education academic advising; in a medical school preferred.Experience working with diverse medical or professional students.The successful candidate must be committed to helping students achieve personal and academic success.Demonstrated experience in developing and / or implementing diversity and inclusion programming.
