Salary : The budgeted salary range for the position is $222,000 – 343,500. Final salary offered will be determined by a thorough assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, and budget constraints. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the full range for a position.

Position Summary

The Associate Chief Nursing Officer has responsibility and accountability for establishing and maintaining excellence in nursing practice and effectiveness and efficiency of nursing operations within the defined areas of Women's and Children. This position also serves for operational oversight for supplemental staffing team and the staffing office. This position serves as facilitator of collaborative professional relationships between and among medical staff, academic programs, corporate programs, and hospital operations for the purpose of creating a healing and supportive environment for patients and staff. The position models the values, acts in accordance with nursing policies and procedures and holds others accountable for meeting standards which may be informed by industry best practices or may be regulatory in nature. This position provides leadership for advancing, developing, refining and innovating nursing clinical delivery operations throughout the University of Illinois.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Actively engage in the development and implementation of the strategic plan for Nursing aligned with the strategic plan for the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System.
  • Determine opportunities to improve the value of care and services to patients and families.
  • Actively provide nursing operations consultation and engagement at an institutional level for the Service Line / Groupings for the organization.
  • Ensure the integration of service line planning into nursing resource management strategic planning and operational budgets.
  • Promote the development and implementation of inter-and intra-disciplinary research by staff and faculty. Contribute to the advancement of nursing through professional research and scholarly activities.
  • Provide vision, direction and leadership to the department of nursing.
  • Work collaboratively across organizational lines to facilitate hospital and nursing operations and ensure patient needs are met.
  • Act as a change agent and manage organizational change efforts to ensure operational effectiveness.

Operational Leadership

  • Lead program planning, implementation and evaluation efforts for areas of responsibility both at a strategic and tactical level.
  • Ensure ongoing personal development plan and provide management development and coaching for other members of the nursing team.
  • Accountable for ensuring exceptional patient experience through patient centered initiatives and high levels of customer service.
  • Facilitate the development and implementation of evidence-based practice and quality efforts.
  • Maintain an environment that promotes patient safety, high reliability of processes and quality outcomes.
  • Participate in and comply with ongoing regulatory and accreditation readiness sustaining a working understanding of regulatory requirements and accreditation standards. Ensure areas of responsibility consistently meet these standards.
  • Develop and oversee departmental budgets and ensure financial accountability for annual operations and capital expenditures and budgets.
  • Assure efficiencies in staffing and resource utilization by comparison with internal and external benchmarks as measured by productivity and cost per unit for areas of responsibility.
  • Assure the availability of appropriately trained staff to deliver a high quality, consistent standard of nursing care. Develop and implement staffing patterns to meet demands consistent with fluctuating volume and acuity.
  • Cultivate a culture that promotes and rewards professional growth, interdisciplinary collaboration, constructive communication, flexibility, teamwork, and customer service.
  • Maintain consistency in the employee performance appraisal process utilizing established standards of practice. Maintain a focus on internal talent management and retention.
  • Promote positive service relationships with patients / families, physicians, labor unions and staff throughout the UIHHSS.
  • Functional Leadership

  • Promote clinical programs both internally and externally. Participate in educational programs.
  • Provide opportunities for staff development based on scientific advances, changes in technology, society, or health care delivery systems.
  • Take an active role in the integration of operations between the college of nursing and nursing services.
  • Model the mission vision and values of Nursing.
  • Consistently display and hold others accountable for displaying professional service behaviors.
  • Minimum Qualifications

  • Current State of Illinois Registered Nurse licensure required
  • BSN or MSN required. Master’s degree required; earned doctorate preferred. Expertise and progressive experience in management and / or nursing management.
  • A minimum of seven years of increasingly responsible healthcare leadership experience required, with a proven track record in ambulatory and / or general hospital clinical operations, clinical program development and related business planning and performance management.
  • National Certification (ANCC, AONE, ACHE, etc.) required or attained within 6 months of employment. A high level of analytical ability is required.
  • Ability to design complex clinical or administrative systems or programs Communication skills to lead, teach and persuade others.
  • Established reputation as a leader, consultant, and spokesperson for nursing.
  • Comprehensive and thorough understanding of all elements of health care delivery in patient care setting, including strategy, business planning, operations and finances.
  • Understanding of health care industry changes, competitor actions, legal / regulatory changes and technological trends.
