Job Summary
The Veterinary Technician General in the Oncology Service will provide technical and paramedical support and nursing care for patients under general direction of faculty clinicians and higher-level technicians in a courteous and professional manner and may be asked to assist in other areas of the hospital. Due to the teaching emphasis of the hospital, the Veterinary Technician may be responsible in assisting in the training of veterinary students, veterinary technician students and others in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in veterinary oncology.
Duties & Responsibilities
An environment of stress may be anticipated. The person in this position must be capable of reliably functioning in such an area. The amount of physical exertion will vary with assignments. For example, the assistant may be lifting a 40lb. dog on and off an examination table. The handling of any animal presents some element of risk or injury. Some strength and considerable caution are required when working with animals during diagnostic or surgical procedures. To some degree, unpleasantness may be experienced under such conditions. This position entails operating equipment, administering medications, and restraining animals of various species for examination. Exposure to anesthetic agents may present a potential hazard. An ability to work in the presence of animal waste and fluids, syringes, needles, and medications are potentially dangerous and must be used with care. Persons allergic to animal dander, dust, pollen, hay, etc., may experience discomfort in this position. Work involving animals with various disease states may expose the individual to viral, bacterial, and fungal agents known to be transmissible to man. Exposure to chemicals and anesthetic waste gases may be potentially hazardous if mishandled or misused.
Minimum Qualifications
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 4080 - Veterinary Technician (General) position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible. The collective bargaining agreement sets a wage of $21.91 per hour. Final salary offered will be determined by a thorough assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Learn to provide standard paramedical support and nursing care
- Assist clinicians, staff and students in conducting physical examinations, handling animals, and updating clinical records.
- Coordinate diagnostics needed for hospitalized patients, including radiographs, biopsies, ultrasounds, blood work, estimate forms and client consent forms.
- Prepare patients for procedures under the direction of clinician.
- Collect blood, urine and other samples and prepare samples for analysis.
- Administer and dispense medication, fluids, etc., to oncology patients under the direction of oncology veterinarians.
- Assist with various oncology procedures including fine needle aspirates, bone marrow biopsy/aspirate, tru-cut biopsies, and minor surgical procedures such as mass excisions.
- Obtain ECG’s, place IV catheters and male urinary catheters, and restrain patients. Identify when to remove and apply bandages and other basic procedures needed for oncology patients
- Monitor vitals, food consumption, urinary and bowel output, etc., noting any irregularities.
- Recognize, report, and act on emergency conditions.
- Collect bacterial and fungal samples from patients within the oncology service.
- Learn to prepare and administer anti-neoplastic agents under the direction of oncology veterinarians
- Learn to receive and release patients for rechecks and chemotherapy treatments
- Learn communication and organizational support for service
- Receive and answer questions via phone from current clients with concerns about their pet.
- Place compounded drug orders with outside pharmacy when needed.
- Assist in training of veterinary students and veterinary technician students.
- Learn to maintain patient and drug records as instructed
- Enter clinical signs, diagnosis and treatment in records of oncology patients under direction of oncology veterinarians.
- Learn to set up, clean and maintain procedural areas, laboratories, and exam rooms
- Operate, clean, and provide routine maintenance of equipment used within the oncology service; such equipment includes refractometers, clippers, ECGs, anesthesia machines, and microscopes.
- Clean, supply and maintain the oncology treatment and exam areas including laundry and general stocking.

Minimum Qualifications
- Successful completion or current enrollment in the final semester of a veterinary technology program accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).
- Must obtain CVT license within 6 months of employment.
- Illinois Veterinary Technician Certification must be maintained throughout employment.
- Familiar with federal regulations and university and hospital polices regarding the use and handling of controlled substances.
- Skill in the operation of surgical, laboratory and diagnostic equipment.
- Able to adapt to new technologies, procedures and equipment.
- Demonstrate adherence to strict protocols.
- Able to instruct veterinary medical/technician students in patient care protocol and procedures and in the use of equipment or instrumentation.
- Able to recognize abnormalities in vital signs of patients, assess charges observed, and take necessary action in the absence of a veterinarian.
- Able to operate on the clinical floor and anticipate needs and directions of staff and students regarding patients and methods of care.
- Able to observe, record, compile and assimilate data.
