Position Summary
This position will coordinate and provide crisis and triage services for students seeking or needing clinical services of the Counseling Center. Position will have primary responsibility to assess students presenting to the Counseling Center in apparent urgent distress/crisis, coordinate initial clinical disposition, and implement necessary follow-up including coordination within the Counseling Center and with other campus and community mental health providers, case managers, and stakeholders.

Duties & Responsibilities


  • Provide crisis intervention services in the Counseling Center (CC) and other clinical access services as assigned.
  • Monitor high-risk triage appointments at the CC and conduct timely evaluations and management of students who screen positive for suicide risk.
  • Follow up to ensure that clients are appropriately assessed, successfully referred, and pursuing treatment recommendations.
  • Provide internal consultation to staff about aspects of client management.
  • Coordinate and participate in rotating protocol for after-hours coverage in response to contracted after-hours crisis counseling vendor.
  • Oversight for and coordination of documents and their dissemination as received from after-hours crisis counseling vendor.
  • Initiate Voluntary and Involuntary Hospitalization Procedures, as needed.
  • Document clinical contacts using electronic record keeping software (Titanium Schedule).
  • Consult with parents, treatment providers, faculty, academic deans, residence life staff, off-campus counseling services, other campus offices and students, when appropriate and with appropriate authorization, in order to provide quality care to UIC students. Make referrals to off-campus therapists, clinics, or hospitals, when appropriate.
  • Under the direction of the Associate Director for Clinical Services, create and coordinate triage coverage/case management services and supervise case manager.
  • Provide training and onboarding experiences to trainees and new staff about triage procedures, provision of triage services, and hospitalization procedures.
  • Train and collaborate with CC support staff to optimize their participation in emergency/triage assistance.
  • Participate in providing educational, outreach and prevention programs originating from the Center.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications


  • A Minimum of a Master’s or advanced degree in counseling/psychology/social work.
  • Licensed as a clinical professional counselor, social worker, or psychologist in the State of Illinois.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with complex health insurance plans and managed care companies.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to work as part of a highly cohesive and interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated competency and extensive experience in crisis intervention and consultation with collateral parties within multi-layered and complex systems.
  • Experience with and commitment to working with clients from diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Have past experience (1-3 years post-graduate) in a university counseling center, supervision of Masters and doctoral level psychology graduate students in an APA accredited site.
  • Demonstrated understanding and experience with college student developmental theory from undergraduate through graduate/professional levels.
  • Demonstrated experience and facility with an electronic records management system, databases, and other technology to aid in the provision of clinical services and administration.
  • Bi-lingual Spanish preferred.
