Job Description
The Literacy Specialist provides technical leadership and support for literacy programming aligned with CELL’s science of reading initiatives and Indiana’s literacy priorities. This role involves connecting research to practice, developing high-quality professional development, and collaborating with PK-12 schools, teachers, and higher education institutions.
Responsibilities
- Support schools, higher education partners, and state government initiatives to improve reading proficiency.
- Lead and implement CELL’s literacy programs.
- Develop and deliver professional development on literacy-specific topics, focusing on the science of reading.
- Design professional learning opportunities using evidence-based research, including learning sciences and neuroscience studies.
- Stay informed on policy changes and curricular requirements related to literacy in Indiana.
- Conduct school visits across Indiana for program evaluation and monitoring.
- Collaborate with CELL leadership and colleagues to identify and address programmatic challenges.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications
- Minimum five years of experience as an elementary classroom teacher delivering reading instruction.
- Practical and theoretical understanding of the science of reading.
- Experience as a teacher preparation instructor, literacy coach, literacy interventionist, dyslexia specialist, or professional development leader.
- Reading specialist or other literacy credential preferred but not required.
- Graduate degree in education, literacy, cognitive/learning sciences, or related field strongly preferred.
- Experience as a school administrator preferred but not required.
